Watched a guy in the fast lane at the pool this morning doing open turns. Reminded me of all the times I almost collided with people when circle swimming because they didn't do a flip turn.

So for all you open turn folks out there...why?

Don't know how to do them either, and when I tried with someone teaching me, I smacked my head on the bottom of the pool. So then and there I decided, I am not doing flip turns in OWS so I am not going to practice them. Also I am lucky where and when I swim I very rarely have to share a lane and when I do it is with 1 person and we just split the lane.

Typical answers - Haven't learned yet. Tried and failed and didn't want to waste time in the pool learning. Haven't had the time to learn. No desire to learn since majority of races are OWS. I'll take a little from each.

same here: don't know how to do them and don't really see a reason to learn, but I generally also have a lane all to myself

There's a rectangular white box up in the right corner of this website that says, "search...type and hit enter." If you type "flip turns" you will have all the answers you need as this is one of the most commonly debated topics on this site. I always use the search function before starting a new thread. It's a great tool.

Edited to say: ST has the same search function.

Do them 'cause it's automatic in a pool, at least with freestyle. Grew up swimming countless laps and pretty much every freestyle one since age 7 or so has involved a flip at the end. I can even do them (as well as swim) in my sleep (really!) Mainly for freestyle though. I have to be really motivated to do a back flip turn (always screw up the count and end up too close to/far from the wall), and you don't do them for butterfly and breaststroke anyway. And can't say I have ever done one in open water.

I learned flip turns at age 40 and I'm glad I did. It makes swimming so much more efficient and fun. To me, it's also more "professional".

Still, have fun swimming whether you do flip turns or not.

I started doing flip turns when I started swimming with a masters group.  Before that I did open turns.  Sometimes if I'm really hammered in a set, I'll do an open turn to get that extra breath of air.

I was a competitive swimmer in my youth, so learned flip turns at an early age.  Now at 61 with a history of some lower back injuries, I feel more comfortable doing open turns most of the time.

Just my personal situation, not offering an opinion one way or another of their value.

I don't know how to flip turn well and I won't be doing flip turns in a Triathlon so no real reason to do them IMO.

I know how to do flip turns and don't do it at the pool. I have read lots of opinions on it, and don't see a compelling reason to do it when I'm training for triathlon. I typically have the lane to myself but if I am in a group swim I'll do flip turns.

I'll get jumped for this, but here goes:

I feel like flip turns take a lot more energy than open turns do.  Because of that, the quality of my intervals go down as my swim gets fatigued faster.

I don't do them and I agree with you on this. I do believe that the effort I would use in learning to do them would wear me out and not really help build fitness for my intended sport. And having been back to OWS for about 2 weeks now I have been reminded just how much different pool swimming vs. OW swimming really is.

I will expend my energy driving my butt to any available OWS venue that I can!

I rather work on my catch than a skill that is not need. I have tried to flip turn really its me kicking everyone for about 30 seconds then I finally get turned. Its not pretty.

Because I like being able to swim 2000 yards without drowning. Every time I have attempted to do a flip turn I either end up with a nose full of water, I kick off early and end up shooting into the floor of the pool, I crash into the wall for flipping too late, or I miss the wall for flipping too early. The result is always the same. I end up having to pull to the surface in a coughing fit trying to catch my breath & my rhythm is gone.

Like others have said, when we have to start doing flip turns in open water, I will work on getting better at them.

Breath control can be a HUGE thing in a crowded open water swim.  I don't know a better way to develope it than flip turns.

I don't do them because I don't know how to do them. Have tried here and there and never really got the hang of it, which is frustrating because I can do flips all day on a trampoline or off a platform into water.

Time constraints and crowded pools make learning them more difficult. If I knew how I'd do them because they look cool. I think.

I grew to like flip turns, and while it takes some getting used to, it really does get easier. At first, like many people, I felt like the wind got knocked out of me and I'd finish the turn gasping for air, but you do get used to it. The only time I've stopped doing it is when I'm in a really crowded pool where circle swimming is going on. A lot of people will just sort of mill about at the end of the lane, leaving little to no room to go flipping my body around, potentially kicking someone in the face. I've also been swimming behind people at times who will do a flip turn without moving over to the opposite side of the lane, and when they kick off, they torpedo straight at me. Not cool.

I've yet to be in a crowded swim and thought "man flip turns would have helped me here".

I had that feeling at first as well, but with more practice they became much easier. I don't know that it takes any more energy to do anymore and it's definitely faster.

I grew up a swimmer and will always do them, even at most tired and exhausted point in training in the pool. For me it takes waaay more energy and effort to stop all of my momentum, grab the wall, turn around and push off.
