Kansas City Triathlon
47F / 8C
Sunny
Total Time = 1h 36m 10s
Overall Rank = 199/315
Age Group = 4549
Age Group Rank = 8/11
Pre-race routine:

Up at 4:00, 2 slices wheat toast with Peanut Butter, glass of water and a cup of coffee for the road. Left house at 4:30 and arrived at event by 5:00. I like arriving early enough to get the end spot on the rack in TA. Since I was in the last wave of the day. I had several hours to walk and visit with other racers and made several trips back to the car to warm-up.
Event warmup:

Light stretch. Prior to Sprint waves starting got in water and swam about 50-meters to warm-up and get use to cold water.
Swim

  • 500 meters
  • 02m 05s / 100 meters
Comments:

Really struggled to sight first buoy due to sun in eyes. Tired following a group but we all headed way to far to the right. Needed to correct course but in the end made good turn at 1st buoy. Fell into a decent rhythm and sight 2nd buoy perfectly.
What would you do differently?:

Have confidence in my form and rhythm and get into ASAP.
Transition 1
  • 05m 30s
Comments:

Way too slow. Granted a few more logistics to deal with including wetsuit and jacket for the ride, but it shouldn't have been that slow.
What would you do differently?:

Need to practice more at home and develop the muscle memory to move through this quickly
Bike
  • 46m 47s
  • 12 miles
  • 15.39 mile/hr
Comments:

Rear tire flat right out of T1...took 6-mins to fix. Used Pitstop and topped off pressure with CO2. In fixing the tire all hydration drained out of aerobottle when bike was put upside down. Thankfully with cooler temps hydration wasn't a major issue, but it sure would have been nice to get a few sips. Took GU (Mocha Love) about 10-mins from finish.
What would you do differently?:

Rethink AeroBottle as hydration set-up and push it more on the bike. HR shows I really wasn't pushing the pace enough
Transition 2
  • 02m 31s
Comments:

Not bad, felt like I didn't waste too much time once at the rack. Did take time to hydrate since I didn't have fluids on the bike leg.
What would you do differently?:

Run to my transition spot.
Run
  • 30m 58s
  • 3.1 miles
  • 09m 59s  min/mile
Comments:

Felt really good of the bike. Legs were a bit tight but nothing out of the ordinary. Went out fast and faded at the end. Lower back started to tighten up around the midway point. Skipped both water stations
What would you do differently?:

Still trying to figure out how much I can push on the run.
Post race
Warm down:

Brisk walk around the parking lot followed by stretching.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

I feel I just sort of showed up to race and didn't do enough mental preparation and planning to nail the specifics perfectly.

Event comments:

Great SWAG! Packet pick-up went smoothly. Race day organization was very well done and definitely had a great after race experience. Finisher medals were very nice.

When I told my husband that I planned to work toward completing a sprint triathlon, he smiled and was supportive, but a bit disbelieving.

I was passing others who were saying, "Good job, 587" (that was my race number). People were cheering me on. These were the nicest people I have ever been around!
