Sunny
Total Time = 11h 45m 22s
Overall Rank = 489/2437
Age Group = 40-44
Age Group Rank = 102/462
Pre-race routine:

Got up, coffee, breakfast, kids and wife up, down to the swim start.
Event warmup:

none
Swim
  • 1h 19m 46s
  • 3862 meters
  • 02m 04s / 100 meters
Comments:

well, what can I say? It was better than the previous two years but no where near how I swim. I'll be back one more time next year. How can I continually swim all kinds of crooked when I know the course, I have no idea. Felt fine until the elbow to the chops getting out of the water. Lady really wanted to be one second in front of me.
What would you do differently?:

swim faster
Transition 1
  • 07m 4s
Comments:

I took my time. Put on my run socks, sunscreen, shirt, shoes, hit the port a potty and left.
What would you do differently?:

I should practice these and save a couple of minutes but meh....
Bike
  • 5h 45m 34s
  • 112 miles
  • 19.45 mile/hr
Comments:

Rode well, the wind really sucked. Don't know if I'd rather have the wind or the heat.

Always amazes me watching the blatant disregard for the rules, dude talking on his cell phone while biking, trash tossers, riding three abreast. Blah.
What would you do differently?:

I just ride, next time I'll ride faster.....then again, maybe not.
Transition 2
  • 05m 5s
Comments:

again, need to actually practice to save time.
Run
  • 4h 27m 53s
  • 26.2 miles
  • 10m 13s  min/mile
Comments:

Well, I ran. Walked the aid stations. I was so deep in my own head for the first half of the run, I don't know what took me so long to realize I needed to shut the flip up and freaking run.

Saw my wonderful family many times. Row, Maddie, Gracie, Christopher, Brielle, Mom and Dad.
What would you do differently?:

Still looking for the run I should be able to do, I need to train more.
Post race
Warm down:

After the race I felt like complete ass. An hour later I was better. I need to make myself hurt more and think less.

It feels good to be back on the "right" side of 12 hours. Having my Dad there was very nice. He's fighting a death sentence style cancer so I have to enjoy the times like these we have left. There is nothing I can really complain about when I'm standing near my Dad. It was a good race, I can do better, and I will.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Work harder Christopher!

Event comments:

I love IMTX, the Woodlands, everything down there. Great atmosphere.

I've convinced my wife to race with me next year. We'll race side by side the entire day, I cannot wait!

Often it makes sense to race slower in order to finish faster and at the same time have a more enjoyable Ironman Triathlon experience.

During the race there will be plenty of opportunities to exchange bottles, so I'm thinking about going with the aero bottle and Gatorade bottle and fill up as necessary. What should I do?

I never imagined that 350 yards broken down into 7 REALLY long lanes would be so big! I gasped out loud and told Grady that maybe I had underestimated the swim.

If a heart patient can do these things, then so can those of you who haven't been split open like a fish and sewn back together.
