Put it under my cap and swam for 35' OWS. Expected to go about 1-1.1 miles and it said 1.35.

How accurate is it under the swim cap?

Not as accurate either behind the cap, i am using the 910XT just as bad .. The best way to use them on OWS is just swim a pre determined distance and use them as a very expensive timer....I brought it up to Garmin Technical and they are not able to resolve it. I am sure those that work with Garmin will be defensive and blame it on user error... All my other Garmin works fine just that OWS mode.

Post the link to the file.
Sometimes the plot is too jagged and that indicates that it loses GPS signal.

i use my 305 under a swim cap and it's pretty good.  Hard to say with any certainty but it seems to be in the right ballpark.

Do you have it on top of your head or more towards the back?

It depends on how many satellites it locked in to before you started the swim.  It could be quite accurate, or not.

Agreed. I've had it be bang-on accurate, and I've had it lose signal and not record any distance at all. The way I look at it is, I only RELY on it for time, and it's a nice bonus when the GPS works (especially coming off the non-swim-friendly 305).

Here, I tested for you

This swim is 1.1km, 550m each way, measured in a canoe

First pic is with a 910xt on the wrist, it recorderd 1.12km, 20m long
Second pic is a 310xt in the bathing cap, recorded 1.07km, 30m short

The two recording were the same swim. Differences in timing is due to not being able to push two set of buttons at the same time :-)

The 310 on my wrists would have been way off.

I used it behind my head under the cap. Why would it measure too long? I thought the distance from maps was 1.1 miles an the Garmin said 1.35.

Not sure it makes a difference but did you set it to "Open Water Swim" in the settings (not just set "Other" mode)

I left it in Run mode. Didn't know there was a difference.

They added this feature after the original release of the 310xt

I believe it allows the watch to compensate for losing signal, normally due to the hand entering the water.

This may help. Even if you have it under your cap, with waves, head turning, splashing....I suspect this could help
