Overall Rank = 143/276
Age Group = M30-34
Age Group Rank = 6/23
Pre-race routine:

Woke up at 4:15 because it takes about 30 minutes to drive to race. Watch a little bit of Married W/ Children. Ate a banana at home. Rachel always wants Jack in the Box before my race, so went there and got a sausage croissant.
Event warmup:

Jogged about 1/2 mile and stretched. At this race, you can't get into the water beforehand to warm up.
Swim
  • 11m 8s
  • 500 meters
  • 02m 12s / 100 meters
Comments:

I let some people get ahead of me, but it turns out that I shouldn't have since I placed 2nd in my AG. Ran in to a lot of peoples feet, but they weren't hard hits. I swam a little to the outside to get out of the mayhem.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing
Transition 1
  • 01m 5s
Comments:

Why oh why didn't I shift into the easiest gear before I racked my bike in transition? Argh, I was in like 5th gear when I hopped on after the mount line.
Also my first time to go sockless. Worked out very well, although according to other T1 times for this race in the past, I wasn't that much faster without socks than with socks.
What would you do differently?:

Make sure bike is shifted into easiest gear before the race starts.
Bike
  • 43m 18s
  • 15 miles
  • 20.79 mile/hr
Comments:

I was doing terrific on the bike......until about mile 6. I reached down and grabbed my gatorade bottle and on the way up I knocked it against the handlebar, and out of my hand it flew! I debated whether or not to go back for it, and after what seemed like 1/4 mile (probably only 20 feet) I decided to stop, dismount, run back to pick it up, and run back to get on my bike. I bet it only cost me about 45 seconds, but still. Lesson learned. Hold on to my water bottle more tightly.
Transition 2
  • 01m 13s
Comments:

First time racing sockless, so my shoes are a little harder to put on than my old ones.
What would you do differently?:

More practice
Run
  • 25m 30s
  • 3.1 miles
  • 08m 14s  min/mile
Comments:

Tried not pushing myself in an effort to actually go faster. And although I was not very tired when I finished, my time still sucked. Still kind of stumped as to why my run is not as good as I want it to be.
What would you do differently?:

More time running I guess.
Post race
Warm down:

Stretched and drank a lot of water.

At mile ten I heard a noise like I had gotten paper in my spokes or something. I looked but saw nothing but a few seconds later my rear tire blows out.

Are these races too close together to give me any sort of recovery? Will I be spent and unhappy racing back to back weekends and then again two weeks after that?

When I told my husband that I planned to work toward completing a sprint triathlon, he smiled and was supportive, but a bit disbelieving.

The challenge? The accomplishment? I want to do this because it is an opportunity to live life. The event is an indoor sprint triathlon. I get to experience the challenge on a safer scale.

This plan is designed to make you go faster. 3 workouts per week in each sport, 2 days of strength training and core work. The maximum volume is around 10 hours toward the end of the 12 weeks.

Since your “A” race is your marathon, which you stated in your question, this should be your main focus. I encourage you to taper a bit for the sprint distance triathlon.
