Pre-race routine:

Different type of pre-race routine today... The Stockholm Marathon starts at Noon, so there's a lot more time to eat, prepare (be nervous) before the start.

Slept in, had a nice breakfast, got ready at the hotel, then proceeded to cram into the Stockholm subway system with all the other runners around 10:30AM enroute to the race start.
Event warmup:

Walking to the event, calisthenic type warmup in the 'B' corall

Comments:

Just an awesome course and event. There is great spectator support throughout the majority of the course.
What would you do differently?:

I essentially ran out of legs in this race. I've been nursing a hip flexor for the past few weeks and I ran too fast in the first 1/2. 1:27:07 was not sustainable today for the whole race. i actually didn't think I had another P.R. in me this weekend, but I dug deep in the final 5k to keep my time under three hours.
The final 7 miles; I was fighting a cramp in my right quad, there were lots of calculated pace and stride changes to maintain a sub-3 hour finish. Just need some good recovery time and a strong build cycle before the next one.
Post race
Warm down:

Lots more walking.... Had to get back to the train, back to the hotel, walked to the ice bar, and then walked to dinner.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Cramping in the final 7 miles limited my pace. Never hit the limit of my cardio engine, but ran out of legs due to personal record pace in the first half that was not maintainable through the final 10 miles of the race.

Event comments:

I would suggest Stockholm to anyone looking for a great international destination and 'big city' type race.

Note: Stockholm as a city is quite pricey, but you can't ask for a much better race.

Course: Mostly flat, 2-loop course, around stockholm with a couple hills to keep you honest. The two loops are different, so it is in no way a boring course. The route passes by many of the great stockholm historic sites before ending with 2/3 of a lap around the 1912 Olympic Stadium.

I signed up for Ironman Frankfurt, next year July - and I am very excited about it. I originally planned to run my first Marathon in the middle of September, but am not sure if this is wise.

I can't say it enough, the feeling of treading water for that final minute, helicopters over head, Mike Riley's Iron-voice over the P.A. - just awesome. I cannot believe I'm here!
