Total Time = 53m 53s
Overall Rank = 19/127
Age Group = M35-39
Age Group Rank = 6/11
Pre-race routine:

Same routine as normal, drove up from Charleston the day of, got packet pickup and then went over the course. in the morning it was coffee, steel cut oats, and a banana. picked up chip and body marking, portapotty and set up TA.
Event warmup:

did a couple mile ride on the bike and a few laps in the pool.
Swim
  • 05m 36s
  • 300 yards
  • 01m 52s / 100 yards
Comments:

i was the only guy wearing a speed suit for the swim but it saves me 3-5 seconds per 100 meters so on this race easily saved me an extra 10 seconds and when we have to run a long distance to TA there is almost no penalty for wearing it. the swim was getting bunched up and i was 36 to go off so they really slowed down the entry times, this combined with the slow girl behind me left me with an empty lane for 3/6 of the laps.
What would you do differently?:

nothing
Transition 1
  • 00m 46s
Comments:

really smooth TA, no gu this time because the course was so short.
What would you do differently?:

nothing
Bike
  • 24m 33s
  • 8.4 miles
  • 20.53 mile/hr
Comments:

i was not expecting hills like that, being a coastal triathlete I am used to flat sections but averaging 20.5 mph is fine. I used the aeolus wheels because I was anticipating some climbing. I pulled my feet out of shoes about .25 miles early when I confused the ymca and a church. Some of the slower bikers caused accidents on the laps as the race went later. i was lucky and avoided any problems. I used bontrager aeolus wheels for this race.
What would you do differently?:

nothing
Transition 2
  • 00m 49s
Comments:

My shoes had not dried completely when I last raced and had some mildew smell, so I tucked drier sheets into the shoes to help the funk, I only pulled 1/2 out of each so when I tried to put shoes on in transition it required me to pull them out and put them back on.
What would you do differently?:

get drier sheets all the way out
Run
  • 22m 10s
  • 3.1 miles
  • 07m 09s  min/mile
Comments:

I chose to run on the spongy path during the race because it felt good, after the race I learned it is slower to run on that than the hard path next to it. The run was pretty shaded and having 4 drink stations on the run was great, I pretty much only had water thrown on me to keep me cool. There were 2 steeps spots on the run that made it tough.
What would you do differently?:

run on path not sponge.
Post race
Warm down:

ran 1.5 miles caught up with my wife and my friend jason

What limited your ability to perform faster:

hill training, T2 shoe prep, spongy running surface

Event comments:

Good short course race that brings out a lot of fast upstate triathletes. Could use a few more portapoties. The body marking line was really long like most setup event races nowadays because they only had 2 people marking (bring your own sharpie if you know how to mark). Award ceremony seemed to be really late into the morning, kicking off around 10 with a race start time of 7 and the majority of people finishing around the 1 hour mark. The DJ for this event is the best in the world and should be used for all setup event races in the upstate! Bike leg only measure 8.4 miles by GPS not the advertised 9 miles.

My first triathlon was at age 56. At first I was just the cameraman at my daughter's first triathlon, then I am doing the races that she has done.

Triathlon is more than just three sports. For most of us it includes the real world of work, family and a host of other obligations. Only one problem: when and how much sleep should we get?

This is not an easy task, especially for the “9-to-5er” with family. But you can do it – all without sacrificing your marriage, job or family.

I heard an athletic trainer say that in life we have many setbacks. The key is to overcome these setbacks, but the question is how?
