Pre-race routine:

Poor, poor pre-race routine. Porterhouse steak for dinner, late night with margarita's involved. Woke up late and was running around trying to get things going the right way. Finally got the kids to my mom's house at 8:00 and drove up to the race. Got my race packet and set my transition area up.

Event warmup:

Decided against the wetsuit and got in the water to warm up about 15 min before the pre-race meeting.
Swim
  • 12m 4s
  • 800 yards
  • 01m 31s / 100 yards
Comments:

Started off in the front row and had a good first 200 yds. After rounding the first buoy I caught on to the draft of someone passing me. She took me to the second buoy and I started sighting the wrong trees coming home. I realized that I was a bit off course when I saw the beach to my right. Ouch!!
What would you do differently?:

Pay closer attention to the course beforehand. Train a little more in the water.
Transition 1
  • 01m 7s
Comments:

Overall the transition went okay. Nothing spectacular. I didn't wear a wetsuit with the race being so short therefore I didn't have any problems with it sticking on my ankles.
What would you do differently?:

Put my helmet on before my shoes perhaps. I'm not sure it would have made a difference.
Bike
  • 31m 31s
  • 12 miles
  • 22.84 mile/hr
Comments:

Bike leg felt great! I held back on the hill out of the ttransition and just spun up it kind of slow. I didn't want to go anaerobic in the first 5 minutes. The hills after that felt really good. I really pulled away from people on the hills.

I got passed by a TTer on a relay with a disc wheel and aero helmet. He was moving! I tried to hold with him but he had me on the flats.
What would you do differently?:

Eat better the night before the race.
Transition 2
  • 00m 54s
Comments:

Forgot to take my helmet off and started to run with it. I am a loser! :-)
What would you do differently?:

Take helmet off when I rack the bike.
Run
  • 26m
  • 3.1 miles
  • 08m 23s  min/mile
Comments:

I went into this race with the intention of taking the run very easy. The longest I had run prior to this since the stress fracture was 2.25 miles.

Out of the transition my legs felt good and I just set the speed on cruise control to finish. I knew I was second off the bike and it was very hard to not try to run hard. Thank God for HR monitors. I kept checking my HR and had to keep backing off if it got over 160.

I started getting passed around 1 mile into the run but stuck to the plan and just cruised through it. One of the workers at the turn around made a comment about me not breathing as hard as the guys in front of me. I walked down the hill at the dam and cruised to the finish.

a 26:00 5K is nothing to be proud of but holding myself back was. I tend to be a little competitive and watching people pass by is not a good feeling. :-)
What would you do differently?:

Nothing
Post race
Warm down:

Walked around and chatted with friends. Had a bagel and some gatorade. I should have stretched more.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Recovering from a stress fracture, need to train more.

So far so funny.  Look like you may have had a focus problem.  I always fear wearing my helmt through the run.  How did the run feel??

Or are you still running??
