It will be my first tri as well. I have about 4 other friends doing it - only one other is doing the swim with me, the others are going to kayak.
Have you guys done any open water swims yet? The lake is still pretty cold; 62 I think?
Cheers,
Jenn

So disappointing. This was the 30th year of the triathlon running and it was the first time ever it has been cancelled.
Much sadness but with the thunder and lightning it was understandable.

aw, bummer! The weather was not pretty Sunday morning.

The Vermont Sun tri is scheduled for Aug 10th, in case people are looking for another race. There is a sprint and an olympic for that day.

I think I may give that one a try! I'll be on my way home from vacation - so not remotely "competitive" but it would be nice to do it! Are you going Nancy?

I am- it'll be my first tri ever! I watched the one on July 20, and it's well run, organized. I've done the bike ride course on my own and swam most of the swim. The swim is a typical kind of shallow lake- some weeds, but fine. And the ride goes around the lake and out to route 7 and back. The roads aren't in perfect condition, but are OK, some rolling hills and one decent climb. The run goes back over part of the ride- a bit of gentle rolling hills too. The group that runs it does 3 of them at the location every summer, so they really have it all downpat. The Aug one is a sprint and an Olympic. And Branbury is nice place to hang out for any family and friends. Nice lake and grass almost up to the water. Pretty sure the husband will have to force the kids out of the water to cheer me on during transitions.

Nancy I just signed up for the sprint on August 10th! It will be my first tri too! My husband will probably also be doing the battle with my boys about getting out of the water! LOL Too funny.
It would be neat to meet and give each other support!
I mapped the bike on mapmyride - the climb looks stout - grade 5 - but someone said it's short. Shall I panic yet? LOL

Nah, Don't Panic! It is pretty short though steep. You can do it. It'd be cool to meet up. How old are your boys? Mine are 11 and 6. I'm feeling pretty comfortable about the whoel thing, and trying to set my expectations realistically- I'm thinking 2 hours, though I'll probably do a bit better- I'm slow and steady in all things!

Mine are 7 & 9 - so right in between yours! We'll figure out a way to meet up - maybe if you know of a prominent landmark or something. Or pm me on here!
I'll be coming straight from vacation so I will definitely be managing my expectations! LOL

Did a sprint and the Oly there last year. Great race venue and great low key fun vibe.

The hills are not bad at all.

Not going to make it this year, too bad.

Have fun.

There's a water fountain right near the entrance- maybe we could meet there? Hope you are having a fun vacation!

I'll look for it! What time are you getting there? I have over an hour's drive. I'm hoping to get there around 7:00 as I've never been there.

Skibummer, thanks for the heads up on the hills! Riding in the Adirondacks is humbling so I'm looking forward to "not bad hills."

I know!! I'm at camp and a little nervous! Relatives have babies here - not much quiet last night! I haven't been able to swim for over a week and a half so I'm very happy it's only 500 yds.
Have to clean the bike up - sand and grass stuck to it from camp. Hopefully I'll see you there tomorrow, Nancy! I'll have my phone with me though I don't know what kind of reception they have there.
Cheers!

The phone reception isn't too good, but it's a beautiful spot. I don't know what I'll be wearing thee- probably some black shorts and a covered bridge half marathon shirt. My tri suit is black and white with red trim, pearl izumi. And I will have bright pink socks and a bright yellow shirt for the bike/run. I'm sure we can do it!

Also, there is a nice short or medium length hike nearby if your kids like that kind of thing- or just hang out and swim in the lake.

Hi Jenn! How did you do?? I didn't see you at all once the swim started. I'm so glad you started asking if there was a Nancy around so we got meet, even briefly! I finished in 1:45 and change, was better than I had hoped, so I'm really thrilled!

Hi Nancy! I am so happy I randomly called out your name! I had zero reception so couldn't read your note until now (back at camp). I'm bummed we didn't get to chat more - the timing wasn't great. Haha. I came in at 1:26 for 3rd in age group. I'm happy but boy did I crash on that run! Uphill right out of the gate! I'll be curious to see how transition times were - I was not fast on those, but I figure it was a great learning experience for future. We should keep in touch for future races!
Great job, fellow newbie!!!!!! We did it!!
Cheers!

wow- great job!!! I guess it was a pretty full field, since a lot of people signed up from after Colchester got cancelled. It was really nice to meet you, even briefly!

My next race is one in NH on Sept 7, then that's it for the year. The NH one has a kids tri too, which my older son is going to do.

Did you feel like the wetsuit was a big help? I'm trying to decide if I should look into getting one.

That would be so cool to get your son to do it! Great!!

I love my wetsuit and the full arms do not inhibit arm turnover at all. It's so buoyant - all you have to think about is your stroke - not trying to survive! LOL. A friend has a sleeveless one and it's definitely not as warm so it just depends on when/where you plan to do your swimming. (though those are probably easier to get off quickly). I got my through the xterra ads on this site.

There were a lot of people there talking about the Colchester tri. I don't know how big the field usually is. It was a nice race and the weather was great (hot even at the end). I'd do it again next year.

Keep in touch and good luck in NH!!
I'm contemplating an Oly in Lake George August 30th but I haven't trained for anything that distance so I'm not sure yet. We'll see.

Cheers!

Well, I took the plunge and ordered one! everyone I asked about it said I should if I was continuing to do tris, and I am so I did!

Also, A friend and I are planning to do a later season (like early Oct?) lake swim in them (She already has a wetsuit) just because we have them. Not a polar bear, but maybe a slightly warm brown bear swim. Wanna come?
