Subject: Sweat in the eyes

This is sort of a spinoff of the running in hot weather thread. Sometimes when I sweat pretty heavily, and it gets in my eyes, it burns like battery acid. I don't mean it stings a little, I mean it's so bad that it feels like razors in my eyes and I have to run with my eyes closed, only opening them occasionally to see if I'm still on the road. Would nutrition have anything to do with this? Could too high of salt intake make my sweat more potent? I've heard of people putting chapstick above their eyebrows to prevent the sweat from going in their eyes, but I haven't tried that yet. It's definitely not sunscreen too because i don't put it above my eyes for that reason. I'll keep sunscreen on the lower half of my face and just wear a hat. Any ideas?

Thanks!

I always run with a wash cloth in my pocket and wipe my eyes as needed. Also, during the summer I tend to run with a hat. It definitely doesn't get rid of the problem but it keeps me cooler and also catches most of the sweat.

No headband or hat is going to stop the amount of sweat that pours off of me here in the tropics. I do use hats with an absorbent band in them, but also carry a hanky or small towel to wipe it out of my eyes--otherwise I'd never be able to see where I'm going. Thank goodness, probably as an adaptation to living here, I'm a very un-salty sweater. Nor does my head seem to sweat much on the bike (the trainer's another story--I need a beach towel or two), only when running. I even race with my hanky--keep it in my hat in T2. Now if they could invent a way to keep the sweat out of shoes--most runs over an hour end with me literally squelching in my own seat. Halo socks?

I get the same thing. I don't put my sunscreen on. Splashing my face with water from a bottle helps. Also wearing some kind of a cap does help.

I've never had sweat 'sting like razors'. It is annoying sure, but never painful. Are you using sunscreen? Perhaps it is just an issue of finding a better sweat-proof sunscreen (or applying it earlier). In any case, an absorbent brimmed hat will fix the issue...no sunscreen required and it'll stop most (or all) the sweat.

As everybody else is saying, the Halo Headband has been a god-send for me, at least for running. For biking, it has helped, but only so much. On a humid summer day the sweat drips off the helmet like crazy, and that can lead to a trickle of sweat into my eyes that can make it hard for me to see where I'm going. For summer races I'll often take a couple of Halos along, and switch them in T2.

I live in the tropics too and always wear a hat that has an absorbent band. I am acclimated to the heat and humidity but still have very salty sweat. I is really often a function of genetics. But anyway, I also find that for some reason, wearing sunglasses somehow diverts the sweat from my eyes as well. After a long run though in this heat, I literally have sweat dripping off the brim of my hat. I don't wipe the sweat off though since it helps cool me a bit.
