Subject: I'm hooked!
Ok, so I'm officially a triathlete! Finished my first sprint today and had a blast! I finished in 1 hr 35 min. I did freak out a bit during the beginning of the swim, reverted to breast stroke and gathered myself a bit. Passed a few people and gained some confidence. My heart rate and breathing in the the first 100 meters were through the roof! Swallowed some water and got some weeds tangled on my neck but pushed on. During the first transition, I took some extra time to compose myself, and made sure I had everything I needed. The bike portion went as planned, and I gained more and more confidence. T2, was smooth with no surprises. I felt better than expected at the start of the run and when I checked my HRM watch I was running faster than ever. By now I couldn't stop smiling. With 1 mile to go, I picked up the pace, and ran my fastest mile to date.
A bit of background on my history, I'm a 44 yr old male. I was athletic in my teen and college yrs, but life got in the way and I found myself being less active through the years. Found out I had hypothyroidism in my late 30's and unfortunately it took several yrs to get under control. I joined a gym 1.5 yrs ago with the goal of losing weight. I am 5'6" and at that time weighed 205lbs and couldn't run 1/2 mile on treadmill! With the help of a trainer, who also taught me about nutrition, I began to see dramatic improvements. By race time I weighed 151 lbs with 10.3% body fat.
I have signed up for another sprint at the end of the month, and will be looking for some Olympic distance races to do by the end of the summer. I currently can't begin to express how good I feel about my accomplishment and looking back on all the hard work I've done to get to this point, I now know it was all worth it!

It's a bit like a religion isn't it?  Dipping your toes into the water at the swim of your first tri is like a baptism into a wonderful lifestyle that you can practice and celebrate every day, which adds purpose and fulfillment to your life.

Thank you all for your kind words! The race results were finally posted today and I came solidly in the middle of the pack. My transition times were terrible, but I'm not to worried about them. I now have a better understanding of the whole process and can't wait to do it again.
Looking back on my performance, I will say I think I felt better than I should have at the end. Meaning I don't think I pushed as hard as I could have...I really just wanted to finish but had an idea of what I could do each leg of the race in, and I came in under all those!
