Sunny
Total Time = 5h 51m 35s
Overall Rank = 929/2082
Age Group = 30-34
Age Group Rank = 95/178
Pre-race routine:

taped up Right Ankle with KT tape prior to race
Event warmup:

Swim on Friday in Choptank River with Xterra Sleeveless Wetsuit as a warm-up. 25 min Bike ride on Sat. as a bike check followed by a 10 min run to loosen up.
Swim
  • 40m 43s
  • 2112 yards
  • 01m 56s / 100 yards
Comments:

Wetsuits were not allowed for the race since it was over 76.1F, however, they had a wetsuit wave at 8:40am and you would still get results but not be eligible for age group awards. I took advantage of this and wore my wetsuit. It was an average swim. Better than my first Eagleman swim, but I felt like I could have done a little bit better and come < 40 mins. My sighting for the first half of the swim was not good and I did zig zag a lot and didn't take a great line. Had problems drafting off of people and staying in a straight line. The swim was fairly shallow and you could stand up for a lot of it. Stood up at the second turn to break shortly and get my sights. Did dolphin kicks in to short from 2nd buoy from the end to shore.
What would you do differently?:

Concentrate on sighting and take a better line. Try to draft more.
Transition 1
  • 03m
Comments:

Forgot sunglasses and had to run back down the rack to get them. Still managed a 3 min transition.
What would you do differently?:

Remember everything when I leave transition.
Bike
  • 2h 53m 11s
  • 56 miles
  • 19.40 mile/hr
Comments:

Had to go to bathroom at around 1:37-1:42 to the run (lost 5 mins of the Bike doing this!) Biked HARDER to try to make up for it as my goal was to break a 3 hour bike time.
What would you do differently?:

Could not help bathroom issue but it would have saved time if I didn't have to. My bike was ovarall solid.
Transition 2
  • 02m 15s
Comments:

Good transition.
What would you do differently?:

Could have improved by racking the bike on the side where by stuff fwas.
Run
  • 2h 12m 26s
  • 13.1 miles
  • 10m 07s  min/mile
Comments:

Very SUNNY and HOT! Not as bad as the first year that I did it, but it was still a very challenging run. Very glad that I wore my Sahara hat as it blocked the sun off of my neck and ears and I was able to wet the flaps so that it kept me cool. I paced myself well for the run, slow and steady at 10 min miles (which included my walk through the rest stops) and was slightly faster on the way back. Right Ankle / Foot Pain was very bad in the last mile and hamstring was cramping. However, had a good kick into the finish!
What would you do differently?:

Put sunscreen on my back. Started to cramp in last mile, maybe due to food/salt intake but it was a great race.
Post race
Warm down:

Pushed myself so was in a bit of shock at the end. Very burnt. Jumped in the river at the end to cool down again and got some food and stretched.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Competed in Memorial Hermann Ironman Texas on May 17, 2014

Event comments:

PR for 1/2 Ironman by 20 mins, PR for this course (from 1st 1/2 Ironman Eagleman) by 35 mins!!!!!! Very happy because I finally broke 6 hours!!!

Some mistakes I made during the Hawaii Ironman 70.3. Don't be caught out on the course not knowing how or not having the equipment to change a flat tire.

It was the morning of Ironman Newfoundland 70.3, I felt queasy. I didn't want to eat or drink anything. I had a full blown case of the pre-race HEEBEE GEEBEES.

A bad race left me smoldering, but time and a gentle breeze ignited my passion to race again.
