At my town's recent art show they had remodelers there. The guy said I could win $1000 off a bathroom remodel which would make it about $500. That would be down from $2000 because you you also get the shows $500 off. My gf thinks it would be have been free. Maybe it depends on how fancy you want to go.

My concern is this more a come on where every wins and they charge you lots of small charges or can I really get my sister bathroom redone for really cheap.

I'm not quite sure what you're asking Chi but I can tell you a full-on bathroom remodel is, on the cheap end, about $4,000-$5,000. I dont know what they'd do for $2,000. Maybe that's just the labor.

Hard to say for sure, but certainly read anything they want you to sign carefully and make darn sure you understand what they are doing or not doing and that it's all in writing beforehand.

I own a business that sells phone systems and with a $10k or $20k phone system I could easily say you can get $1000 off or more and bury it in labor or just mark it up because there's no easy way for anyone to compare it with apples to apples.  It's one thing if you're buying an iPod because you know exactly what it costs form 10 different places for comparison.

When you get into products and services there's a lot of places to wiggle things around or even potentially upcharge you into something more.

No business is going to intentionally lose money unless there's a perceived benefit of greater value.  If they got a lot of advertising and publicity at the art show, then it may be completely legit and they're just counting it as an advertising expense.  Or, as your gf suspects, it could be a total sales pitch and you won as well as 50 other people that entered the drawing or whatever it was.

Well it just the Tub and walls they put around the tub. I looked online and several of them are $500 just for the parts. My girl thought that they said $4000 so maybe it would make it $2000 for the tube and walls. My dad did his own so I really do not know market prices. Basically I get $1500 off but not sure if its hey we jacked up the price $2000 just so you think your getting a good deal but where you are actually paying more. I guess I never won anything so I am concerned. It is not for me anyway since I live in an apartment. I hate to screw over my sister that I am trying to help.

The best advice I can give is to follow your gut.

I have a few rules when it comes to buying stuff, I will almost never buy stuff that's solicited to me and am very skeptical of any "deals" or "free stuff" that requires me to spend money.  If it's free, then great.  If it's "$2000 off" but I have to fork over a check for $2000, then not in a million years.

I just had this done - it will be $5,000 at least. When we first got the quote from a friend of a friend, I thought it sounded high so I called another place to get a second opinion of what it would cost to pull the tub and tile in a shower.

The woman didn't even hesitate when I asked her. Her response was $10k!

yeah now I wonder if he was telling us 2k for parts and then there is labor. He was trying to sell us to sign up so I would not be surprised. Either way my sister decided she does not have the time for the free estimate. Oh well I have to give up my $1000 off raffle winning. My dad got his done and it was $500 but he did all the labor himself (with some help from me.)

I'm guessing everybody that applied/entered was a WINNER

Its basically a way for them to get in the door to sell their services. As I kid I would always entered contests, on my dad's behalf , and we always won. We would get really annoyed after awhile.

A free cleaning of a room of carpet was just a salesmen wanting to pitch the home steam cleaner etc. Free room being painted was a pitch for the entire house etc

Anybody in Chicagoland want to go for a long bike ride ... and then come over to our place to install some wood flooring?

There you have it IMO.  the Estimate would come in somewhere higher than the company would typically quote, then you have your $1000 discount applied, you "win" because it's $1000 under their "free estimate value" and they win because they're of course still making money.

It's advertising, it's not a competition, you certainly weren't the only "winner".  As someone already mentioned, it's to get the foot of that company in the door and then the sale begins.

I went into the pool area (as this was a pool swim) and got body marked. That's when it hit me that I was there to race - this was not a clinic.
