View Member's Race Log View other race reports
Des Moines, Iowa
United States
Overcast
Total Time = 1h 51m 2s
Overall Rank = 230/3952
Age Group = F35-39
Age Group Rank = 35/561
Pre-race routine:

Got up and had a bowl of cereal. Then took along a banana and Bonk breaker for a snack. Had about 8 oz of water that AM.
Event warmup:

Some dynamic stretching to get my hips feeling good.
Run
  • 1h 51m 2s
  • 13.1 miles
  • 08m 29s  min/mile
Comments:

I knew going into this race that I was not half marathon ready. Sure, I'd done the distance a few times, but my pace was slow due to the mileage, a winter surgery, and just finally feeling good again.
What would you do differently?:

Not sure there's much I could have done. I think I could have drank more fluids on Friday and spent a little less time in the sun.
Post race
What limited your ability to perform faster:

Simply not being in shape for any type of speed.

Event comments:

This is a great race if you can stick around and enjoy the after-party. I had to leave immediately to get to my daughter's softball game out of town. I was in a rush and didn't even get anything to eat. In the past, however, I've really enjoyed everything they offer. Great race venue for a mini-trip. Des Moines is a great city and Saturday mornings are top-notch.

Way to go Jen! Did you at least feel like you paced it well? Not every race will be awesome, but I can still feel I got something if I can at least execute for how I was feeling at the time.

Thanks. Honestly, I went out WAY TOO FAST only because that's what I was used to doing only I typically don't die off. I think my first three
miles were around 7:30 pace and then I settled in about 8:15 and stayed there until the last couple of miles where I really struggled. I was pretty beat by mile 12. It sounds like the heat got to a lot of people but didn't seem to stop the gals I run with! However, they are all pretty talented and had been training fairly hard. I had 1:46 in my mind as a decent race finish time, but honestly was expecting more like 1:44. A little humbled I think...

I just finished the NYC marathon on Sunday and I think I'm going to venture into triathlons. I am doing an Olympic distance and I want to do a 70.3 next year too. Any advice?

I just ran the Boston Marathon under nine minute miles, can I run eight minute miles for my half Ironman training runs? Or should I go slower?

I just started doing tris this summer and I have two under my belt, both sprints. Is it reasonable to build up for a Oly in early ‘09, with a HIM in Oct of ‘09

Steady is our walk. Ignoring the pain that is radiating from my feet, I continue to place one foot in front of the other. Again I wonder, “Why am I doing this?”

Having three seasons under my belt I thought I knew what I was doing. That all changed with a few new challenges and a bunch of new friends.

This program should be used for an athlete whose goal is to run a marathon in the 1:30-2:30 range and has a good running base in the past 8-12 weeks.

We did really well with the beers, which will explain my reluctance to get out of bed on Saturday morning.
