Subject: Coming back after a break...and getting slower???
Hello all,

I'm puzzled. I started the 30-week Hal Higdon Novice supreme for a full marathon I'd like to do in November. I haven't raced/done tri's since 2010.

I didn't expect to start back where I left off, and I didn't. When I started in the first of March, I had a hard time holding a 10:30 pace on my 3 mile runs.

But I've been following the plan religiously (honestly I'm working almost a month ahead) and I think I'm getting SLOWER. My last few 3 miles have been in the 10:50 to 11:20 pace range.

What is going on??? I got new shoes, I eat well, hydrate well, I have missed NO days of training, I cycle on my off days, what the heck?

Am I wrong to expect measurable improvements after 3 months?

Your body is probably just feeling the cumulative effect of the training. Every time I significantly up my volume my training paces suffer for a while until my body adapts and starts to get stronger.

Thanks for that. I realize that coming back is going to be as much of an exercise for my ego as it is for my body.

Using tri training for breaking bad habits, getting healthy and gaining confidence plus a little bit of humility.
