Total Time = 7h 18m 58s
Overall Rank = 533/578
Age Group = 50-55
Age Group Rank = 39/40
Pre-race routine:

bkfast, easy drive to venue. all good
Event warmup:

  • 58m 6s
  • 2112 yards
  • 02m 45s / 100 yards

pretty crappy swim time. However I do have to consider that this was the first open water swim since IMFL. I haven't been doing much pool work. Navigation was off in a straight line, have to work on that .
Transition 1
  • 06m 6s

walked from the swim exit to t-1. worked the suit off. generally took my sweet ass time. wanted to make sure I got everything/
  • 3h 22m 5s
  • 56 miles
  • 16.63 mile/hr

good bike. actually 3:07 ride time. flatted at mile 20 ish. slit tire and tube. repairs and all took some time. oh well. kind lost the mojo after that.

trying to find a pace for IM
Transition 2
  • 04m 54s

pretty good t-2. walked bike in and all.
  • 2h 47m 48s
  • 13.1 miles
  • 12m 49s  min/mile

good course. was shooting for 12 min/mile. mile to mile felt good. walked water stops. ate and drank just right. chatted with people here and there. hit the 12 mile mark at around 2:30. hit port potty a couple times.

trying to find and hold a pace for IM
Post race
What limited your ability to perform faster:

more practice and training. first tri of the season reveals the cobwebs, I think I could have bopped a 6:30 at least.

overall I was trying to find pacing for IM rather than racing. more of a training day and practice than a race. Kept a good positive mood overall.

Event comments:

overall great race.

Is it realistic to race a sprint and Olympic distance race within 2-3 weeks of one another to gauge my progress before tackling the half Ironman?

I just started doing tris this summer and I have two under my belt, both sprints. Is it reasonable to build up for a Oly in early ‘09, with a HIM in Oct of ‘09

I just had a couple of problems, I could count the number of triathlons I had contested at zero. Secondly, I could count on one hand the number of times I had been swimming in the last 17 years.

This half Ironman plan covers many weeks of challenging, but attainable training for someone who has some endurance experience, and ideally some Olympic distance races within the past season.
