Graniteman Endurance Series
70F / 21C
Sunny
Total Time = 1h 17m 18s
Overall Rank = 23/193
Age Group = 30-34
Age Group Rank = 8/22
Pre-race routine:

Woke up at 5 and had PB toast with banana and honey, went back to bed woke up at 6 10 showered and left home. The drive is about 50 minutes. Ate fruit snacks about 20 minutes before my wave went off
Event warmup:

Swam 200 yards and stretched out, mentally prepared my transitions.
Swim
  • 10m 51s
  • 586 yards
  • 01m 51s / 100 yards
Comments:

It went well and all the time in the pool has made me a more fit swimmer, however it has not make me much faster.

The timing mat right at the transition area which was about 100 yards from the beach. I was passed by two people in my age group during the run, so I knew I was out of the water before them and their swim times were faster than mine, so not sure how accurate it is.
What would you do differently?:

I need to get professional help on getting me to swim faster
Transition 1
  • 00m
Comments:

I am not going to put my T1 time here because the chip time says 4:20, that is not possible. My timing chip came off with my wetsuit in T1 so I never had it on the bike, so that must be where the problem was
What would you do differently?:

Work on removing suit and keeping chip on
Bike
  • 43m 6s
  • 15 miles
  • 20.88 mile/hr
Comments:

The official timing was off because of my transition time, My bike split is as shown.
What would you do differently?:

Maybe start off slower, overall I am pleased with my results.
Transition 2
  • 00m 58s
Comments:

I had to dig out my timing chip from my wetsuit so that added 10-15 seconds, I probably could have done without it due to the back up timers
Run
  • 21m 10s
  • 3 miles
  • 07m 04s  min/mile
Comments:

Good course, I passed a fellow age grouper about 1/2 mile in, he was always in sight and we actually went back and forth a few times on the bike. I was passed by another age grouper about 1 mile, I tried to pick my pace to match but could not hold on, I backed off, turns out he was crushing 6:36 miles. I made a turn and saw someone ahead, I passed him around mile 2, and was happy to see it was another age grouper, I gained 1 spot during the run.
Post race
Warm down:

ate food and found shade to cool off

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Nothing besides lack of great swim form

Event comments:

The recovery food was great, I believe a lot of post workout recovery so It was nice to have muscle milk and protein bars as well as fruit. It Was a great food spread for a smaller race.

I would highly recommend this race to anyone interested in triathlon as well as the experienced racer who is looking for competition.

My favorite thing about this race was the ample transition rack space. Rack spots were not assigned but there was plenty of room and I did not feel crowded at all.

I am signed up for the series races and looking forward to Clearwater in a few weeks.

The triathletes really inspired me. I watched them in awe as childlike thoughts went through my head like, "I want to do that!" But then reality set in. “Who are you kidding?

I’ve signed up to do the St. Anthony’s Olympic Triathlon in April. I will be 49 in May and need some advice on a good training program to fit into my full time work schedule.
