Pre-race routine:

Stayed at Super 8, ate at Mexican place again. Rained hard Sat afternoon and evening, forecast for Sun was not promising. Honey Nut Cheerios and banana. Raining when we got up and during pre-race until just before start of race.
Event warmup:

No run/bike warmup due to rain. Short swim warmup.
Swim
  • 37m 24s
  • 1642 yards
  • 02m 17s / 100 yards
Comments:

One of my worse race swims ever. 200-300 yds in I almost quit. I was thinking I should just stop get back to shore and we could go home and get ready for BWCA trip. I was out of synch kind of floundering and just not into the race. I had a little mental pep talk with myself and decided I should get my butt in gear. Shortly after the first turn I swallowed a bunch of water while looking forward to sight. Bad enough I had to stop because I was gagging and coughing so much. Finally was OK and took off. Terrible swim, 6:02 slower than last year.
What would you do differently?:

Get mentally prepared to race. Remember to close mouth after breathing when sighting.
Transition 1
  • 01m 52s
Comments:

No T1 issues. 2nd in AG +3 from G Taylor. 21 sec faster than last year.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing
Bike
  • 1h 07m 10s
  • 24.8 miles
  • 22.15 mile/hr
Comments:

Good bike. Garmin #s are off at end. 25 sec faster than last year
What would you do differently?:

Nothing
Transition 2
  • 01m 47s
Comments:

Decent T2. 4th in AG +31 sec off of Taylor
Run
  • 43m 37s
  • 6.21 miles
  • 07m 01s  min/mile
Comments:

Had troubles w/Garmin switching to run so I had to set up a new run. I felt strong on 2nd half and actually picked up my pace for a negative split. Started a light rain/sprinkle on the 2nd half which felt good.
What would you do differently?:

I had a little left at the end maybe could have gone harder sooner but you never know for sure. My bike fitness is still lacking.
Post race
Warm down:

Talked to Larry Stracke, now the race director here. He had cramping issue at Apple, also happened at Worlds for him. Originally there was a 2nd place finisher from Canada in our AG but he had a 34.8 avg on the bike, must have took the sprint turn instead of the Oly turn. They listed him at the awards but shortly after the results were updated and he was dropped. Looked like they had gift cards instead of prizes as in years past. Greg Taylor won the AG 10th overall 2 weeks from his 60th BD. So what was he doing in our AG? must have been age on day of race not USAT age. Get him out of my AG!!

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Poor swim. Went from winning my AG by 12 min to 4th. 7:10 slower than last year, almost all on the swim.

I looked at the swim buoys and start thinking, "Man! How am I ever going to swim that? That looks like a very long distance from the bridge. I have never done it in one go." There's no turning back.

After doing duathlons for the last couple of years, I decided to go for a triathlon. Starting with an Olympic-distance race perhaps wasn't wise, but it was fun (of a sort).

Experts agree, doing a “mock,” triathlon on the course you’re racing can aid you in your training; performance and most of all quell some nervous energy.
