Total Time = 1h 27m 57s
Overall Rank = 20/87
Age Group = 50-54
Age Group Rank = 2/8
Pre-race routine:

Woke up at 3am...I had the alarm set for 4am. Decided to stay up. Ate my oatmeal and a bottle of water. Drove the 60 miles to the race site losing an hour from Central time zone to Eastern time zone. I was the second racer there. Walked around to loosen up and used the bathroom twice. Registered and got my chip and body marked. Came back to the car and helped a young lady with her bike. Set up my transition and the waited.
Event warmup:

I ran about a half mile to loosen up and did about 100 yds. in the lake. The water was warm even though it had rained the day before. No wetsuit today.
Swim
  • 15m 16s
  • 880 yards
  • 01m 44s / 100 yards
Comments:

Open water swim is not my forte`...I was terrified several years ago of water over my head. I had a nice steady comfortable swim. I am usually about in the middle overall on the swim and this time was no exception. I caught quite a few from the previous wave and 2 women caught me from the last wave. By my time I think the swim was a little short or the swim two weeks ago was a little long.
What would you do differently?:

I swam my race so I was happy
Transition 1
  • 00m 58s
Comments:

Breathe Rite strip on... number belt on...socks and shoes on...glasses and helmet on...off to the races
What would you do differently?:

Went smooth
Bike
  • 47m 8s
  • 16.1 miles
  • 20.50 mile/hr
Comments:

I had a really good ride. Rode my time trial bike and really attacked the hills and let it all out on the down hills. I caught one of the women who had swam passed me halfway through the bike. I had a rider I battled the last 6 miles. We would keep passing each other. I won out in the end.
What would you do differently?:

This is the best I have ridden this year in a race. I need to get out and ride more but the weather has been horrible for riding.
Transition 2
  • 00m 27s
Comments:

I always have a fast T2 time.
What would you do differently?:

Everything went perfect
Run
  • 24m 5s
  • 5 kms
  • 04m 49s  min/km
Comments:

By the time we got to the run it had warmed up and it was super muggy. I tried to pace off of other people but nothing worked. The run course got changed at the last minute and we weren't told. I got passed by the overall female and I knew I was 3 mins. slower because of the wave start on the swim. I saw the 2nd place female about 1/2 lap behind me so I gave it all I had to stay ahead of her.
What would you do differently?:

If I would have known the run course had changed I would have changed strategies. I was expecting some hills later in the course so I was saving myself a little but they never came.
Post race
Warm down:

Jumped in the lake to cool down

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Muggy weather made it hard to breathe.

Event comments:

This was the best Endurance Sports Management has done for being organized. There are usually about 160 at this race but only 87 today. It seems like the numbers are down this year at all the races.

Are these races too close together to give me any sort of recovery? Will I be spent and unhappy racing back to back weekends and then again two weeks after that?

When I told my husband that I planned to work toward completing a sprint triathlon, he smiled and was supportive, but a bit disbelieving.

The challenge? The accomplishment? I want to do this because it is an opportunity to live life. The event is an indoor sprint triathlon. I get to experience the challenge on a safer scale.

This plan is designed to make you go faster. 3 workouts per week in each sport, 2 days of strength training and core work. The maximum volume is around 10 hours toward the end of the 12 weeks.

Since your “A” race is your marathon, which you stated in your question, this should be your main focus. I encourage you to taper a bit for the sprint distance triathlon.

This summer, I am planning on doing three triathlons. What should my strategy be for training, tapering and resting during, before and after each race?
