Is there any advantage or disadvantage to wearing a trisuit vs tri shorts and shirt. My coach told me to go with the shorts and shirt because it's easier to go to the bathroom. Does it really matter at all or is it just a personal peference?

I find it to be prefence.  In my case I still have weight to lose so I go with the suit because I don't have to worry about the top riding up.

I have found the going to the bathroom thing is no big deal once you get used to it.  Unless your going to be going by the side of the trail or something, then it would be a problem.

Personally I just feel better in a trisuit.  There are quite a few people who find them uncomfortable and/or constrictive though.  You may need to look at a few different brands to find one which fits your body type.

The suit would probably be more efficient. However, it's important to take your proportions into account. I am very long in the torso, so if I did get a tri-suit, it would have to be one that was long enough to be comfortable.

Pit stops are something to consider, also. I had to stop during the run, and wrestling with damp shorts was a pain. A whole suit could be worse.

Interesting topic. Thanks for bringing it up.

One less thing to mess with in T1.  I hate trying to put a tri shirt on when I'm wet as it bunches and rolls and I find myself having to contort in a variety of embarrasing ways in order to get it on.  Unless of course you wear your tri shirt during the swim, then it's a preference call.  For me at 248 lbs., tri shirts just don't fit whereas suits do.

With a 2 piece tri suit...shorts and vest...you swim/bike/run in both top and bottom.

There are advantages to both systems. No hazzle on the one piece for short races with no need for a pottie break. 2 piece set up is often more comfortable for anyone with a longer torso.

I like the one piece idea better but hate the problem of having to pee quickly in one. But I also don't like the two layers of elastic that the two piece gives you..the short's top and jersy bottom at the waste for longer tris. I found the constriction bothersome in my last 1/2 IM. Although a 2 piece set up is great for sprints.

Mostly it's personal preference. For me, I'd much rather go with the top and shorts -- more versatile in the grand scheme, and, really, I find the suits kind of... gay. Not that there's anything wrong with that...

Actually, though, I haven't seen a suit that I'd rather wear instead of a top and shorts.

Two piece allows me to go topless during the summertime races down here, as do probably 80% of the male triathletes (and not hardly enough of the females) in my races.

I have a new trisuit and went for a ride in it on Saturday to see how it feels before wearing it for the LA tri. It was really comfortable and I think it'll be better for T1 than 2-piece (no worries about pulling my shorts off along with my wetsuit!!). But, it was a major task to go potty. I decided it would be good for sprint distance but for an oly or anything where I might need a pit stop, I would want a 2-piece.

I have used both in sprint to half iron man distances. In the sprints it really has never mattered, but in the long distance races I like to pieces better. The restroom thing is one issue, but I really just find the 2 piece more compfortable.

Thanks for the help everyone. Trisuit it is. I'm an Athena and never thought about my stomach showing. . In the that case I've decided on a trisuit.
