Pre-race routine:

Been building distance all year. This race will probably be my 'long' race of the year.
Event warmup:

Stretch and cheered on my friend and his kids in the Fun Run.

Comments:

Felt good but was admittedly nervous about the distance. I had never run more than a 5K before this. I think I handled it OK. The highlight of the run for me was running under the HUGE American flag at roughly the 3-mile point. I was surrounded by two FDNY and at least three military folks in full ruck. All were saluting as they ran under. I really hope someone got a picture as it was a great scene.
What would you do differently?:

I overhydrated (my typical MO) and had to pee really bad at the 2-mile mark. Seriously considered stopping a few times but didn't. Got to get that under control for future races as I'm sure I could have gone sub-39 minutes if I hadn't been fighting that mental battle.
Post race
Warm down:

High five the kids on the way in to the finish. Then I stretched and grabbed some water. The post race activities looked great, we just (unfortunately) had to get out of there due to some other plans. I'll definitely be back for this race next year.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Being overhydrated didn't help. I'll work up to the distance better next year and go in with more of a racing mentality and less of a "I just want to finish without walking" mentality. We'll get there!

Course: Kind of a weird course in that it's faster (more downhill) for the first 2-miles. The last two miles (especially mile 4) were much harder. Overall a fun course though. Still deciding if being able to see the finish line for over half the course is good or bad :)
