FIRM
67F / 19C
Sunny
Total Time = 1h 17m 33s
Overall Rank = 55/84
Age Group = F under 19
Age Group Rank = 2/4
Pre-race routine:

Woke up at 5:30, ate breakfast of scrambled eggs, toast w/peanut butter, left 6:15 arrived at race 7:15, Oly started 8am, Sprint at 9am. Registered, picked rack spot...my number was 371
Event warmup:

I went into the river and practiced swimming with Laura. I got nervous because my Mom wasn't doing it with me and I was scared of the swim as it was a river swim with a smoochy ground that dropped off quickly.
Swim
  • 08m 56s
  • 440 yards
  • 02m 02s / 100 yards
Comments:

The current was strong in the middle of the river and coming back to shore, it was very hard to site. Most everyone swam way of course down river. The ground was very uneven...right near the shore was 5 inches and then took another step it would be 2 feet and stepping to the side it would suck your leg in.

Laura and I started up river as far as we could go. I tried drafting, but they were either swimming to slow or they pulled away from me. I felt comfortable swimming once I got going. My Mom said I was in the top third of all the women and I was the youngest by 3 years:)

I sited off people not bouys.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing
Transition 1
  • 03m 4s
Comments:

I wanted to take wetsuit off while running this time and I did and take my goggles and swim cap off after taking off my wetsuit half way and I did.

Long run up the hill to T1 area.
What would you do differently?:

Keep work on getting faster...and taking off wetsuit faster.
Bike
  • 39m 39s
  • 11 miles
  • 16.65 mile/hr
Comments:

Roads were mostly smooth but at places rough. Some confusion where to go...I wasn't sure if I should turn or go straight at this one place due to poor waving of the flag.

I passed some people and was passed by others. I tried to push more than last race and I think I did. There were 3-4 really big hills, and one steep downhill with a right turn at end...did okay with that.

Goal was to pick it up after half way but didn't know where half way was...picked it up at the end.
What would you do differently?:

Practice more on the bike.
Transition 2
  • 02m 30s
What would you do differently?:

I need to work at putting my shoes and socks on faster.
Run
  • 23m 20s
  • 2.5 miles
  • 09m 20s  min/mile
Comments:

Goal was to increase pace at turn around, but I forgot. I tried to push hard, but I was more tired than I thought. I passed some people and a few passed me but most were doing the long course.
What would you do differently?:

Train more and consistently run 2-3 times a week.
Post race
Warm down:

I walked around, got some water, watermelon, ice cream and hung out with my parents, Laura and her husband.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Doing a race the week before and just getting home from vacation. Training...

Event comments:

It was a fun race. They had a nice band playing and the location was great other than having to park far from the transtion area.Food was different than most Firm races ...hot dogs, salad, and watermelon, and of course free ice cream...yummm!

It was cool to place 2nd. Of all my sprints I have done this year, I have placed 2nd in all of them...this race there were the most competitors....the others were all 3 people. The girls who placed 3rd and 4th were 14 & 15 and I beat them by about 7-8 minutes...cool! I have always been the youngest competitor. When I got my award, I picked a prize I didn't even know what it was and don't have the thing it goes to....fuel belt gel flask...maybe my mom can use it.

This was my 3rd USAT sprint this year, so I achieved my goal that I will be ranked this year.

I hope to place in top 5 or 10 in the country. Not many girls my age are ranked....last year just 2.

Emily...you did amazing!

We are so proud of you for overcoming your fears, getting out there and doing your best....plus you had fun doing it which is most important.

Wow....you really stepped it up and did great all around....#1 on the swim in your AG and in the top third of women on the swim....nice bike pace and great run with a super sprint to the finish.

You have worked hard and did something most kids your age would never dream of doing...you are a brave and amazing young women.....can't wait to see all you can do in triathlons as long as you continue to enjoy it and have fun!

Emily.....awesome race!

Congratulations on your 2nd place finish!   It's hard to believe you're only 11..you are getting faster and stronger at every race.

Good job getting over the river swimming fear. I swim in a river a lot and I hate putting my feet in the smooshy mud too!

Guess what Emily.  Judging from your time, you would beat me if we were racing in the same course.  I'd better avoid you now

Great job!
