Hey all!

I've never done a triathlon but I plan on completing one this upcoming winter with a friend who is also a newbie! We are both very active but also broke college students. We have bikes and running shoes but what other gear is essential to completing a triathlon? We aren't worried about time yet, just completing it

Thank you

A helmet!

Tri shorts. Ones you can swim, bike and run in. You can then also train on the bike with them. Then a tri suit if can afford it, save time in T1, but if you aren't worried about that, just put a t-shirt on in T1.

Few different shorts and t-shirts/vests for training.

A watch to time training.

I would go with a Tech T or Tank if your not going w a tri top.

You need swim goggles. The race will provide a swim cap.

Water bottle for your bike
Helmet on the bike is mandatory!

Shades to look cool

Sunblock

That's it....

Thank you so much! This will be very helpful for both my wallet and my first race!

Agree with the above, except that if your first race has a pool swim, they might not provide a swim cap. My first one didn't. They're cheap, and you should train with one anyways. Other than that, start with the basics above!

Depending when and where in the winter you may need a wetsuit. Most of the tris here in FL it's not necessary but there are a few where it would be prudent. You can rent them though, you do not have to buy.

Already a cyclist and not a bad swimmer, I figured all I had to do was build up to running a few miles and I’d be ready to go. The challenge invigorated me, and I ran out to buy new running shoes.
