CGI Racing
81F / 27C
Overcast
Total Time = 58m 35s
Overall Rank = 9/1198
Age Group = 30-34
Age Group Rank = 3/64
Pre-race routine:

Wake up around 4, eat breakfast, some coffee -- try to get the bloods flowing. Light bike ride to make sure everything was ok
Event warmup:

Some jogging, stretching
Swim
  • 07m 59s
  • 500 meters
  • 01m 36s / 100 meters
Comments:

It was a good swim. I followed the advice I read from someone who did the race last year and stayed by the starting buoy further from shore. Swam out, did my thing and found myself alone (guy in my age group that beat me was in the elite field). I need all lead I can muster heading into the bike so I pushed it hard. After the turn, things became a mess as I caught up with the back end of the previous wave. Low visibility in the water so my sincerest apologies to the couple of people I accidentally ran over.
What would you do differently?:

Besides training, not much more.
Transition 1
  • 01m 39s
Comments:

I still have a lot of steps here. I have regular biking shoes so I put them on here (as well as socks. I have the socks down to science. I did not have choice spot for my bike, but that happens. End of row near the back (long way to run to the bike in/out area).

With the bike mount I struggled to get into clips. Thought I was in (I wasn't), foot slipped out, came down hard onto the seat -- painful for men.
What would you do differently?:

Clipping in when under pressure.
Bike
  • 29m 10s
  • 11.5 miles
  • 23.66 mile/hr
Comments:

Awesome bike. I told myself, see what you can do and if you blow up on the run, then so be it. I can really feel the fitness coming into place with the longer training rides. I still have work to do. Considering nobody in the top 10 (except for 1 person a 23) had a bike place lower that 13th, there is still improvements to make. With the waves being by Age Group and leaving the water first, I held off all riders until a pass at 5.5 and one at 9 miles.
The constant stream of bikers was nice motivation and a boost as I was passing. Timed my turns so I wouldn't have to slow down to share the turn with someone.
What would you do differently?:

Not much, it was a great ride (for me). Need to work on my tricep strength. I use a road bike so I am riding deep into the drops to stay as aero as possible. My triceps hurt more post race then anything else
Transition 2
  • 01m 14s
Comments:

Lots of traffic into transition and split main aisle for ingoing/outgoing. I managed well but probably could have pulled in a few more seconds.

What would you do differently?:

Nothing
Run
  • 18m 31s
  • 3.1 miles
  • 05m 58s  min/mile
Comments:

Started off the run slower around 6:20 pace and built as I went (last mile was about 5:45 pace). I passed one guy who passed me on the bike early on and told me that there was another person in my age group further ahead and what he was wearing. My stomach was a little tight so I was having problems stabilizing breathing, but kept calm, worked through it and kept pulling in distance on the kid ahead of me. I pulled up close then made a definitive pass with about a half mile to go and didn't look back. Strong finish.
What would you do differently?:

Push harder. I think I had a little too much left at the end.
Post race
Warm down:

Nothing. Felt great afterwards.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Only conditioning. Experience -- in the sense I could have probably pushed harder on the run earlier. Short of a few things here and there, I don't think I would have changed a thing.

Event comments:

If you want a fast, organized race, this is it. Great place to put up a fast time.
It was a good race, but I expected more from a race this large. Not nearly enough toilets for starters -- they were in pretty foul shape by 7am. There was supposed to be a beer tent, and there was none. Something happened that there wasn't going to be one, but an alternative should have been made -- I like beer after a race. The awards were rushed and there was no podium -- it is nice to stand up there and have the wife snap a picture. Again, minor things -- but everyone works hard and those that get medals should have a chance to enjoy it. They were calling up the next groups as the ones were still coming up for their medals.

I was passing others who were saying, "Good job, 587" (that was my race number). People were cheering me on. These were the nicest people I have ever been around!
