Pre-race routine:

It starts with earlier in the week: I like to plan out a reasonable race that still presents a challenge to me, and attempt to reach those goals. For this race, I jotted down on a little yellow sticky note the following info:
SWIM - 8:30
BIKE - 36:00 (20mph)
RUN - 29:00 (7+ min/mile)

I figured these times would put me in contention for a possible piece of hardware, but I know as well as the next guy it's very tough to control who else shows up and has the race of their life.
Friday Night: I got the car loaded with gear to save time in the morning. I got my hydration ready and laid out what I planned to wear. Then I just kicked back with a movie (which wasn't very good - The Constant Gardener) and got to sleep around midnight.
Saturday Morning: Up and at 'em well before the sun! I ate my standard bowl of oatmeal and packed a few other snacks, which of course included the obligatory PB&J sammich. We were on our way out the door at 5:15, just as scheduled. It was a quick 45 mins to the race site, and we arrived just as the volunteers were setting up the last racks.
Event warmup:

For the most part, this went down like usual, but there were a few nice twists. While hanging out for the 3 full hours before I was to take to the pool, I used my new iPod. YAY!! I had plenty of time, so I read the rules entirely.

Then my wife and I watched the swimmers for a while. It's amazing, and almost perplexing, to see the wide variety of swimming styles out there. I like watching the competition unfold almost as much as I like participating. Almost.
We also watched some cyclists for a bit too, clocking a few of thier lap splits, just to see what could reasonable be achieved out on the course with all those turns and lots of traffic.
I took my time getting everything set up,
http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b324/Super_Suby/pumpitup2.jpg
carefully thinking of the best way to organize things.

http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b324/Super_Suby/TAsetup2.jpg
Finally it got to be about 8:45, so I took a very quick jog, and did some very light stretches, and then hopped in the little pool next to the 50m pool. It was really nice to have a place to get acclimated and take a few strokes, adjust gogggles, etc. I think that was really helpful.

With about 1 minute to spare, I took my place in line, right in front of #246 (we'll see him again later).

As you can see, I appear to have donned a red flag for a swimming suit, and I appear ready to pull them off.
http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b324/Super_Suby/flagshorts.jpg
I assure that was not the case, though.
The first couple hundred meters were strong, and I felt like I was on the right pace to have a solid swim. I passed a couple people along the way, and managed not to get passed by anybody else.
http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b324/Super_Suby/swim1.jpg
About half-way through, I thought that maybe I should relax a bit and try to get the breathing more under control. But that thought was fleeting. I wasn't about to go easy.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing. I swam up to my abilities. No better, no worse, so I'm happy about that.

Comments:

I don't spend any time messing around in transition normally, and this one was no different. It was easy to find my spot since I had an "end piece" and a red bike.

I quickly got ready and got a decent hop onto Attack Mode, and away we went.

Comments:

Even though I had never done much high speed cornering or turning practice, I enjoyed this course. At each turn, I would imagine myself being pulled back in a slingshot and launched. It worked wonders visualizing myself being flung forward overtaking other racers.

I told the wife that she should expect to see me every 5:30 to 6:00 minutes. So when I did the first lap in about 5:11, she wasn't ready to take any pictures. haha! I had to holler at her as I zipped by to get her attention. We were both pleasantly surprised. Of course, it's easy to have that extra power at the beginning of the bike leg. I continued to hammer good and hard, getting my heart and lungs working full tilt. On each lap I sipped a little bit of water, but only a tiny sip. No juices, concoctions or gels. Just good 'ol fashioned water!

On the 5th or 6th lap, a few guys passed me as they had just come out of the water and were blasting off on their bikes. One particular kid on a litespeed really went cruizing by. I stayed within myself, however, and kept up the effort that I had been maintaining.
What would you do differently?:

Perhaps give chase to the guys passing me a bit more. it would have been nice to give them a duel early on in their race.

Comments:

Once again, this race had no rules or regulations about the TA, so it was a complete free-for-all. No lines for mount/dismount, etc. Hmmm. Well, I decided I would ride through the TA like everybody else. I had to bark at a few dingbats in the middle of the TA, but this time I got some help from others in clearing a path. That was nice!
http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b324/Super_Suby/T2-1.jpg
In the picture link below, the 2 TA wanderers are on the left, and you can see that just moments after we yelled at them, they managed make their way back out into the middle. I can only imagine them at a local stock car race or something. Dumb. But perhaps more importantly, on the right side of the picture, is a girl checking me out. She's in both pictures, actually, and it's pretty darn obvious :)
Also, how sweet is it that I didn't even realize that I was multi-tasking in T2 by taking one shoe OFF and putting another shoe ON at the same time? I guess I was in the zone.
http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b324/Super_Suby/T2-2.jpg
Nice tattoo, huh? GO BT!
So what exactly was this girl thinking? YOU BE THE JUDGE!!!

A) I'll be he has a lot of leather-bound books, and his office smells of rich mohogany.
B) Oh my gawd he's just so... fast. And his ass is exquisite.
C) Sweet shoes. I've gotta GETSOME of those.
D) I hope his wife doesn't catch me on film shamelessly checking out his butt.

Vote just for fun... you know you wanna!
What would you do differently?:

I would not overshoot my rack and have to back my bike up into the rack. Instead I would dismount just short of the rack, and push the bike under the rack and just lift the seat up along the way.
No biggie really.

Comments:

I got off the bike feeling good. Better than I ever have in the past. I started out with nice quick little strides and settled into a grove. next thing I know, I'm picking off people left and right and having a great time doing it. The volunteers were awesome at this race, and I thanked all of them. Most people must not have been doing that because I would get more cheers and encouragement on following laps. They really appreciated that recognition, and rewarded me with an extra boost. It was awesome!
http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b324/Super_Suby/run2-2.jpg
My first lap felt pretty good and I came in around the 56:30 mark, according to my watch.
http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b324/Super_Suby/run2.jpg
Just then, my wife informs me that it's going to take a 1:09 finish to place. I do some figuring in my head, and decide it can be done, but the first lap had taken me about 13:30 to complete. It would take an excellent next 2 miles to pull it off. Negative split, style.
So I headed out to conquer the lap once more. I made a deal with myself to keep up the solid pace until the 1:03 mark, and then really go for broke.
Just as my watch was informing that it was GO time, another runner, #246 came up behind me at a very good clip. Determined to finish strong, I went with him. We race neck and neck for the next 6minutes, giving everything we had, never exchanging a word, or even a glance. It was a fight. We surged past other racers, blew past spectators, and completely ignored the water stop.
Then, around the final turn before the home stretch, I attempted to execute my plan. (I love this pic, it's intense.... like a fire in a 3-ring circus.)
http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b324/Super_Suby/run3.jpg
I would allow him to put about 10 meters on me in the final stretch before coming from behind to overtake him at the end. I really expected him to fold at the end. Alas, he did not. A true competitor. We were both already at a dead sprint, and there was no way for me to make up the distance I had freely given him. Live and learn. That won't happen next time.
At the finish line, after the near-collapse
http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b324/Super_Suby/finish.jpg
we both acknowledged that neither of us could have gone that fast without the other one pushing us. That was nice.
What would you do differently?:

I don't think it needs to be said again.
Post race
Warm down:

Wandered around and stretched. Checked the results sheet about 100 times. Put my stuff in the car, and waited for the awards.

http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b324/Super_Suby/firstplace.jpg

At last, I claimed the #1 spot in my AG. It was an amazingly tight race there, too. The top 3 places were within about 45 seconds of eachother.

Event comments:

Lots of great things about this race, including the really nice plaques, and the great lunch buffet for competitors and their families. That was money well-spent. The other local races should all take a good look at this race. Why do we only get 1 banana at other races for our $40?

Notice no tri-top today since I was racing sans-HRM just for fun. I thought it would be a good idea to test out how I do without it. I think that at times, it serves as a distraction rather than an aid. So, this was a test of that theory.

I vote D. Laura could kick anyones if she wanted to. But generally, teacher types don't do that. Otherwise, they wouldn't be teachers.

Great race Brandon. Congrats!
