Sunny
Total Time = 2h 26m 2s
Overall Rank = 19/285
Age Group = M40-44
Age Group Rank = 2/24
Pre-race routine:

woke up early, breakfast at hotel, drove to high school, got on bus to go to T1
Event warmup:

couple hundred yard swim
Swim
  • 24m 57s
  • 1500 meters
  • 01m 40s / 100 meters
Comments:

good swim, had to run and wade around a life guard for a few yards before you could swim
What would you do differently?:

not much
Transition 1
  • 02m 11s
Comments:

bike stuck on rack for a spit second, had to stuff wetsuit into a gear bag which took a little extra time
What would you do differently?:

not much
Bike
  • 1h 07m 36s
  • 40 kms
  • 35.50 km/hr
Comments:

coach advice was to have AHR higher in the second half which I did, felt I was going pretty hard at a good HR, he thought I could push a few beats higher
What would you do differently?:

not too much, was probably my fastest bike split in an olympic
Transition 2
  • 02m 26s
Comments:

long way to run with bike, sidewalk riding to get to transition
What would you do differently?:

not much, it was OK
Run
  • 50m 23s
  • 6.84 miles
  • 07m 22s  min/mile
Comments:

OK run, didn't have the speed to run under 7's like I did last year due to training for longer course, coach said not to expect to be as fast, effort was good
What would you do differently?:

not much, would have been nice to know ahead of time that the course was long
Post race
Warm down:

walked, easy ride later that night

What limited your ability to perform faster:

HR was high, ran it hard

Event comments:

Good race in New Albany for inaugural Challenge, a little bit of a pain logistically with the point to point race, checking in ahead of time, riding a bus, etc.

Overall happy with performance to get a 2nd AG in a fairly large race.

Great job on a hot & tough day, Brian!

I won't let you pass me on the run the next time (ok, I probably will be just as helpless to prevent it, but I gotta talk a little smack, hehe)

I just finished the NYC marathon on Sunday and I think I'm going to venture into triathlons. I am doing an Olympic distance and I want to do a 70.3 next year too. Any advice?

After doing duathlons for the last couple of years, I decided to go for a triathlon. Starting with an Olympic-distance race perhaps wasn't wise, but it was fun (of a sort).

The boat was being tossed around. Someone noted that there were whitecaps on the waves. Another guy said, “This is going to be challenging.” I began to wonder what he meant by 'challenging'.
