Set Up Events
Total Time = 2h 10m 17s
Overall Rank = 8/280
Age Group = Open Male
Age Group Rank = 4/8
Pre-race routine:

Woke up at 3:30 with the others I was staying with who were doing the Half which started an hour before my race. Ate breakfast and hit the road.
Event warmup:

Ran 3 miles and got in the water 15 minutes before start to get acclimated and swim around a bit.
Swim
  • 23m 10s
  • 1500 meters
  • 01m 32s / 100 meters
Comments:

Good swim for me. Managed to find some feet for a while and sighted well and never went off course. Took the swim very mellow to make sure I was good for the work to come.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing
Transition 1
  • 02m 57s
Comments:

T1 started right out of the water and had at least 100m run into transition counted towards it plus another 50m out of transition. Took my time and tried to let my HR settle a bit.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing
Bike
  • 58m 35s
  • 40 kms
  • 40.97 km/hr
Comments:

Didn't hit the power I wanted, but it went well enough. Drank two bottles of roctane and took a gel.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing
Transition 2
  • 01m 12s
Comments:

Timing mat was well outside transition and I ran out the swim finish chute for some reason. Had to double back.
What would you do differently?:

Read the text on the giant inflatables.
Run
  • 44m 25s
  • 10 kms
  • 04m 26s  min/km
Comments:

Went to crap here. Was in 4th OA off the bike and cramped up from shoulder to knees 2.5 miles in. Realistically I was hoping to go 42min, which would have given me enough time to pick up a podium slot.
What would you do differently?:

Take my salt tab in the AM like I thought I needed to.
Post race
Warm down:

Nothing. In a world of hurt.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Dehydration causing muscle cramping on the run

Event comments:

Fantastic race. I'll definitely be back. Great to get out there and be in the same swim start as a few pro's. The venue is perfect for fall race simulation: cool temps, wetsuit swim, flat bike, out and back run with a long downhill finish. Loved it.

My first triathlon was at age 56. At first I was just the cameraman at my daughter's first triathlon, then I am doing the races that she has done.

The triathlon made a lot of sense as I could fit the training around early mornings and other times that wouldn't eat too much into my family time. Things never go completely to plan do they?

I found a sprint, the Lake Las Vegas Triathlon, that was happening four months down the road and signed myself up; much to the surprise of friends and family.

The first time I ventured into the deep murky green lake and could not see the bottom my muscles tensed and my imagined fears surfaced. What exactly lies beneath?

Both the Lake Triathlon Shoe CX210TRI and the Lake Road Shoe CX225 offer distinct advantages. I tested both shoes and found them to be extremely comfortable, good looking and durable.

Knowing where the fluids are, how they will fit on your bike, how much to reach for, and when to reach for it should be understood prior to ever setting foot on the course.
