Subject: Carry spare tire with you???

I was riding on Sat and got a major slash in my back tire.  My spare innertube was no good to me without a spare tire.
I ended up calling the wife (yes - do bring those cell phones on the ride!), and she brought me a spare tire that I just happened to have in the garage.

So.....does anyone carry a spare tire and extra tube with them?  (especially on those really long rides).  Or is this just overkill?

Dan

It happened once that my tire got or had a tear in the side as I was on my way home during my afternoon commute. I changed the tire and put in a banknote between the tube and the tire. I made safely to a local bike shop about ten kilometers away with no problem and bought a new set of tires...I was due.

I carry all kinds of crap with me (no spare tire though), but I've never had a flat except once from tires that were crumbling away. I guess I'm just lucky. How often is a normal person likely to get flats?

I used to just carry a patch kit and CO2 but I started carrying a tube when I began group riding. I'm the only one who used 650s and I didn't want to hold the group up while I patched.

A dead tire is a good reason for the cell phone.

I normally would not consider carrying a tire in addition to the regular stuff (tubes, co2, phone, etc).
After the destroyed tire incident, I may reconsider for any of my longer rides.

PS - Maybe I need one of those SAG wagons to follow me around...

If you've got a spot to wrap some duct tape, take a small piece with you.  Or even fold a piece back on itself and toss it in your repair pouch.  Doesn't happen very often, but you can use it to put over the inside surface of a tire slash and it might allow you to limp home.  In all honesty though, it's a pretty low percentage occurance.  In 30 years of riding, I've never had that happen to me (knock on wood).

What we did before cellphones was......

Carry a tire boot of some sort. A boot is a piece of some reasonably sturdy material that will keep the tube from poking through a cut in the tire and allow you to ride a little further

Dollar bills work, as do powerbar wrappers or GUpack wrappers, duct tape will do it too. Sometimes a piece of debris from the side of the road will work. The truly hardcore will carry a short section of an old tire that has been cut from the bead.

To use it, position the boot on the inside of the tire (between the tube and the tire) over the cut. Keeping the boot positioned while reassembling the tire and tube is a bit tricky, but a bit of patience will get you there. Then reinflate the tire as normal (maybe a little less pressure than normal).

It ain't pretty, but it beats walking or having to call for a ride.

Two tubes, frame pump, levers and cell phone. If I need more than two tubes (tire, for example) then the ride was just not meant to be. Time to go home.

BTW, I love my Topeak Road Morph frame pump. Gets pressures up to 120 in no time, has a little gauge on it, functions as a floor pump.
