How close is your nearest triathlon?

Member  1004 |  Subject: How close is your nearest triathlon?The closest triathlon to me is a two hour drive (150 km) away. I was wondering if this is unusual or do most triathletes have to travel to race. |

Most of the races around here are within an hour. The closest ones (and the ones I've continued to do year-in-year-out) are within 15 minutes. And I don't really consider myself to be in an urban area. |

I guess you're going to have to define "triathlon" or at least say what distance For super sprints, there's one about every month or so during the warm months approximately 10 miles away from my house. Might take 20 minutes to get there. For a sprint, there's at least three a year within a 2 hour drive. For OLY and HIM twice a year about the same 2 hour drive. For an IM, It's a 4 hour drive for one and overnight for any other ones. For a double iron or a triple iron there's one about 2 hours from me once a year. |

Extreme Veteran 3020 | Subject: RE: How close is your nearest triathlon? There are sprint tris in my neighborhood, as it's on Lake Erie. Rev 3 Cedar Point is 45 minutes away. For WTC events, Steelhead 70.3 is 2 hours, Muncie 70.3 is 3 hours, and IM Louisville is 5 hours away. |

Champion 14571 the alamo city, Texas | Subject: RE: How close is your nearest triathlon? the closest is about 15 miles away, and uses a trail i like to train on all the time. i can choose from about 20 sprints and olys within an hourish drive from home. there are now 2 HIMs locally. we have mild weather and lots of reasons to drag your family into town to race, so i get lots of options. |

Probably at least 15 or so tria give or take one or two, within easy driving distance (45 minutes to hour and a half drive). Probably 4 or 5 within a 20 min drive. Good variety too - from super sprints to HIM, pool swim, river, bay swims, ocean. All mostly flat though. |

If I ever get to Half IM, I'm looking at 4 hours away. Full IM would be Chattanooga, TN... about 5.5 hours... Closer if I get this job in Knoxville *crossing fingers* |

| 754 | Subject: RE: How close is your nearest triathlon? There is one about half an hour from my house, but it was unbelievably unsafe last year, so I won't be doing that one again. I spoke to someone in my tri club afterward who said that she hasn't done it for years for the same reason. Next weekend, there is one that is about an hour's drive away. My race last weekend was two hours away, and because it started so early, I went the night before and got a hotel. The one that gets me excited is Savageman, which is about an hour away. There are also a couple off-road triathlons in the area that I would like to do someday, but right now my mt biking skills aren't up to it. Edited by happyscientist 2014-08-06 8:07 AM |

Alpharetta, Georgia Bronze member | Subject: RE: How close is your nearest triathlon? There's a new race inside of town, about a 15 min drive from my house. Otherwise it's a 30-minute drive, 45-minute drive then a 3-hour drive. Most races I want to do fall in the 3-hour drive range. |

In Central Texas there is probably a triathlon within an hours drive (several closer) every weekend from May to September, including a dozen or so Olymipics, three HIM and one IM. If I did every tri within 2 hrs I'd do 2 a year (add an Oly). So when I hear about people doing a handful of triathlons in a year I'm always a little jealous. 3.5 hours gets me to St Louis, but I'm not waking up early enough to get to transition with that sorta distance. So, basically anything over 2hrs would be a big ordeal with eating out and a hotel and packing kids. It just isn't happening. |

| 1502 Katy, Texas | Subject: RE: How close is your nearest triathlon? I live in Key Largo and all the tris around here seem to be in Miami which is about an hour and a half drive. For the one's I have slated for this year, I sprung for a hotel nearby. When I start to do the math, to get to the transition area by 5:30am, I need to leave my house by 4:00 which means I have to get up at 2:30-3:00 and that's just not worth it for me. I also don't want to get stiff legs from sitting in a car for hours right before a race. |

My first triathlon will be next weekend (Petoskey) and the start is something like 500m from our place. I don't think they get much closer than that! |
