Stand at Mile 1 with a sign that says "1 Mile to Go!  (turn back now)"

"REALLY boring parade!"  (Stolen idea from someone else here - I can't remember who posted it.)

Some I've seen...

"I'm sure this seemed like a good idea 4 months ago"

"Your feet are hurting because your kicking so much !"

"Run faster.  My arms hurt."

"Last is a place too."

"The voice in your head that says you can't do this is a LIAR!"

Stand at mile 1 with a sign saying...

"2.1 miles between you and a cold beer."

I always wanted to hold a sign that said "this is a sign" or something similar. "Something Inspirational" would also work. There's also the classic "Meh." or "here's a picture of a puppy/cat/unicorn/liger" (of course with a picture)

Saw two good ones during my tri a few weeks back

- Smile if you are not wearing underwear

- Seems like a lot of work for a free banana

Both made me laugh when I needed it.

"RUN...The zombies are catching up!"

"Remember....you paid for this!"

"Run fast.....insert heart throb/movie star name, is giving out free hugs at the finish line"

"It gets easier on the 2nd lap"......when cheering a one lap race

"Last one to the finish buys the beers"

Show me your...

Seriously though, signs are overrated. Instead, use semi permanent chalk to spray the motivational quote on the road.

Totally irrelevant now, but do you all remember when Paul Ryan was a VP running in the 2012 election and the media all figured out he had lied about his past marathon times?! Well that October I ran the Chicago marathon. Paul Ryan signs everywhere!! So funny. "Don't feel bad, Paul Ryan finished yesterday!" So far my fave wasn't a sign, but a tshirt this guy was wearing during a half. The back read "over fifty.... check"
"diabetic.... check"
"cancer survivor.... check".
"ahead of you!..... check!"

"My wife is the best" or something along those lines - but you have to be holding that sign

"Free foot rub waiting for Mrs. BuckHamilton at the finish line!"  (In my case it would be a footrub, I don't know what you wife would like?  an ice cream?  a beer?  maybe some cutesy inside joke?)

There were some really good ones on that site.

It wasn't a sign, but somewhere after mile 10 of an HM, someone was standing by the side of the road shouting, "You look good! You feel like crap, but you look good!" It made me laugh, and I appreciated that.

Some great lines so far.

Not really for a 5K per se, but my two favorite at last marathon were "You have stamina--call me" and "toenails are for whimps"

I've cheered on DH and friends in a tri with a hill on the run.  I'd stand 3/4 of the way up the hill and yell stuff like "Kill that hill!!"  or "Kill that hill, it's not gonna kill you!!"  I'd yell that for everybody and totally lose my voice by the end, being the over-enthusiastice cheerleader I am.

Haha yea the Lebron one was awesome. Although as someone who couldn't have cared less about the world cup, I also appreciated the sign that said "Still more exciting than soccer!"

That's awesome. Speaking of hills, I love it when people dress up in costumes, ala TDF, and position themselves at the summit. I've seen that a couple of times at triathlons, it would be equally epic at a 5k if there was a hill.

A few I remember are "Chafe now, brag forever" and "Your feet hurt because they are kicking so much a--."

I also love the pop culture signs -- Grumpy Cat, Paul Ryan, etc. Maybe there's a funny Justin Bieber joke in there...
