Canton, North Carolina
United States
Set Up Events
70F / 21C
Overcast
Total Time = 2h 12m 54s
Overall Rank = 14/285
Age Group = M 35-39
Age Group Rank = 3/11
Pre-race routine:

Breakfast. Drive from hotel-30 minutes. 2nd breakfast. Talk talk talk. Gear prep. Talk talk talk.
Event warmup:

WARM UP in the frigid water, read race report from alst year and saw I needed to warm up more. Well, since they added the half I took TOO much time, or had too much time to warm up. SO I warmed up and then sat on the dock and RE-WARMED up.
Swim
  • 24m 52s
  • 1500 meters
  • 01m 40s / 100 meters
Comments:

First 4 sight buoys were to be treated as turn buoys-they had to be on right shoulder. Orange buoyus coming back in were sight buoys. Per USAT rules you can have them on either shoulder. I felt bad for those not knowing this-you swam further.
What would you do differently?:

More pre-race training, Im behind on my swimming. Slower than last year! Time my warm up better.
Transition 1
  • 02m 53s
Comments:

Suit stuck on arms, left leg hammy cramping, suit stuck, too much talking to friend doing half relay with friends.
What would you do differently?:

Notta, get suit off faster.
Bike
  • 1h 04m
  • 40 kms
  • 37.50 km/hr
Comments:

I know this course, I wrecked on it last year. I also drove it extra this year. I hammered this course. If I do it next year I need to push harder, I don't think I held back but I didnt A group it.
What would you do differently?:

Ride it with "A" group mentality.
Transition 2
  • 01m 16s
Comments:

If youve read my reports-I like <1:00. I was close to this last year at T2, and would be this year, had they not made transistion DEEPER to account for the half athletes.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing. Good T2
Run
  • 39m 55s
  • 10 kms
  • 03m 59s  min/km
Comments:

Didnt hold back, lonely course. Still love the gun range near the top!
What would you do differently?:

Push harder on the false flats going uphill.
Post race
Warm down:

Feet up lying on my back. Empty tank.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Legs a little twitchy from long downhill, not used to that much downhill running-smile and Kick it.

Event comments:

Half zip long sleeve tech shirts-ROCK
Coaster/ashtrays as awards, and medals only for the half. meh-and you ran out, how is that possible for a race that sold out?
Being in a valley there isnt a pizza place to deliver-but Id like to see a food truck handle post race food-not saran wrapped sandwiches and cookies. Fruit and drinks were great.
SETUP tent was selling all old gear.
Been twice now and still likely to go back for a third-make the half a TRUE half and I may do that next year.
Race results posted fast, and pictures posted fast.
THANK YOU VOLUNTEERS AND POLICE!

My first triathlon was at age 56. At first I was just the cameraman at my daughter's first triathlon, then I am doing the races that she has done.

The triathlon made a lot of sense as I could fit the training around early mornings and other times that wouldn't eat too much into my family time. Things never go completely to plan do they?

I found a sprint, the Lake Las Vegas Triathlon, that was happening four months down the road and signed myself up; much to the surprise of friends and family.

The first time I ventured into the deep murky green lake and could not see the bottom my muscles tensed and my imagined fears surfaced. What exactly lies beneath?

Both the Lake Triathlon Shoe CX210TRI and the Lake Road Shoe CX225 offer distinct advantages. I tested both shoes and found them to be extremely comfortable, good looking and durable.

Knowing where the fluids are, how they will fit on your bike, how much to reach for, and when to reach for it should be understood prior to ever setting foot on the course.
