Sylvania Triathlon - Olympic Course - Triathlon

Sylvania, Ohio
United States
Elite Endeavors
77F / 25C
Sunny
Total Time = 2h 33m 6s
Overall Rank = 46/192
Age Group = 25-29
Age Group Rank = 3/10
Pre-race routine:

Beets and coffee; the usual.
Event warmup:

5 minute run, no bike, very quick swim just prior to start. No wetsuits allowed and last wave of swim, so I didn't want to be cold.
Swim
  • 30m 24s
  • 1500 meters
  • 02m 02s / 100 meters
Comments:

Very poor navigation, however I almost expected this since I was planning on minimal sighting. Previous races I was sighting too much and losing so much time. I was taken off course drafting to the first buoy and then once I left those feet and I never quite got back on course until the final 400m. Still posted a better time and was happy to fix my technique; now just to find the happy medium!
What would you do differently?:

Sight a touch more frequently, but not too much more.
Transition 1
  • 01m 36s
Comments:

Took long since there were no bins to wash off feet and feet were covered in sand. I tried to clean them off and then gave up leaving sand all in my socks. Otherwise out quickly.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing really.
Bike
  • 1h 14m 11s
  • 40 kms
  • 32.35 km/hr
Comments:

Strong ride, felt good. Passed so many people due to the older men and women starting earlier than us. So weird and a bit obnoxious. Oh well. Had a guy drafting me most of the way, also obnoxious. Oh well, I raced my race and was happy with it. I buckled down and hit my goal.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing, just get stronger on the bike this off season.
Transition 2
  • 01m 1s
Comments:

Low racks made racking bike difficult.
Run
  • 45m 40s
  • 10 kms
  • 04m 34s  min/km
Comments:

Didn't drink enough on the bike, so I was a little dehydrated which I definitely felt. I was dumping water on me too, so I can't tell if dehydration was giving me the chills or if the water/breeze were doing a good job. I got nervous and chalked it up to dehydration.
What would you do differently?:

Drink more on the bike.
Post race
Warm down:

Stretch and drink TONS.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Dehydration on the run, wind on the bike, poor navigation on the swim.

Event comments:

Excellent race; Elite Endeavors does an outstanding job. On time, cannon start was neat, post-race lunch/awards were good. I dislike the 'young fast guys' starting last wave start as I swam over and biked around a lot of people, but oh well. I'll be there next year; a little better trained so I can take the win and move up overall!

I looked at the swim buoys and start thinking, "Man! How am I ever going to swim that? That looks like a very long distance from the bridge. I have never done it in one go." There's no turning back.

After doing duathlons for the last couple of years, I decided to go for a triathlon. Starting with an Olympic-distance race perhaps wasn't wise, but it was fun (of a sort).

Experts agree, doing a “mock,” triathlon on the course you’re racing can aid you in your training; performance and most of all quell some nervous energy.
