Mountain Man Triathlon
75F / 24C
Sunny
Total Time = 3h 16m 38s
Overall Rank = 153/218
Age Group = 35-39
Age Group Rank = 19/22
Pre-race routine:

Coffee, chocolate milk and raisin bread with almond butter.
No warm-up other than the bike to the race (parking is a little far), mostly due to the venue it was a little stressful to be arriving "late" 5:30am with a 6:26am start.
Free for all bike rack/transition area.
I felt very ready for the race.
Event warmup:

N/A
Swim
  • 46m 21s
  • 1500 meters
  • 03m 05s / 100 meters
Comments:

I was definitely cold to start, and it may have hampered my performance, but not by much. By the time I rounded the first bouy, I started to get into my groove.
This was a much better swim than my first tri.
What would you do differently?:

with the sun peaking over the trees, and my "need" to breath from my right side; I will work on left side breathing, and getting tinted goggles.
Then I need to work on my swimming speed.
Transition 1
  • 04m 29s
Comments:

My girls entered the transition area (bad but made me very happy).
We didn't disturb anyone (at least that I could tell).
It was great to get hugs and kisses from my family, and to see them so excited.
What would you do differently?:

I wore a Jersey from my Hurling club, and while I was happy to support them, I think next time I will stick with the tri top and wear it under the wetsuit.
Bike
  • 1h 23m 8s
  • 40 kms
  • 28.87 km/hr
Comments:

I felt great on the bike.
I really think I need a bigger "big" gear. I was unable to keep cranking enough to push my speed on the down hills.
Could be my ancient bike or it could be me.
What would you do differently?:

Work on my training for higher speeds vs overall conditioning.
Transition 2
  • 02m 18s
Comments:

I think this transition was good for me. I'm not trying to break any records, and again was able to see my family, get kisses & hugs from my girls.
Best thing I heard, was my 4-year old saying "Daddy I want to be a triathlete!"
That pumped me up for my run, and made me so proud.
What would you do differently?:

quick laces, lose the biking gloves, ditch the hat for the bandana.
try it differently for the next few weeks.

Run
  • 1h 00m 22s
  • 10 kms
  • 06m 02s  min/km
Comments:

felt good, very comfortable.
What would you do differently?:

Need to work on my overall speed, to get it down.
Still this was a great run for me, I wish I could've shaved 22 seconds off my time.
Post race
Warm down:

Met my family, got big hugs and lots of happiness. Talked to a friend that relayed the race, and a friend that works for the race. Lots of fun.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

I had to pee, so bad and was unwilling to stop at a tree and my first chance for a port-a-potty was squashed by occupancy, and my next chance was with 1.2+/- miles to go (pun intended) I was close to breaking my under 1-hour time on the run so I pushed through.

Event comments:

This was my second triathlon, and it was great.
I heard a lot of people say it was tough, and at 7000' elevation it might be for some. For me it was perfect.
Nice cool race, great support.
I loved it.
Nothing better than all of the racers and fans bringing a positive attitude that helped my daughter say "Daddy I want to be a triathlete!"
Awesome.

I quickly browsed an article in Men's Health that talked about doing a triathlon, and how it wasn't really that hard. With a "tsk!" I quickly turned the page while thinking, "Yeah, right!"

There are so many reasons I love this sport and extremely buff, handsome men disrobing next to me is one of them.
