Steelman Triathlon
Sunny
Total Time = 2h 45m 59s
Overall Rank = 188/400
Age Group = F60-64
Age Group Rank = 1/1
Pre-race routine:

Up at 3:15 a.m. to leave the house by 4:00. Arrived at Linda's on time and then Janette's early. Good thing we did because Route 313 was closed with a serious accident. Long story short, we got lost and arrived way later than we had planned. We had to park a mile away from T1. That meant a lousy spot on the rack. At least we got there in time to compete.
Event warmup:

None.
Swim
  • 24m 38s
  • 1500 meters
  • 01m 38s / 100 meters
Comments:

I was hot with the wetsuit on.

Swimming is by far my best leg.
Transition 1
  • 02m 42s
Comments:

No socks on the bike and didn't miss them.
Bike
  • 1h 24m 6s
  • 24.6 miles
  • 17.55 mile/hr
Comments:

Had one GU and one and a half water bottles of watered-down Gatorade. Did not use the on-course bottle exchange.

My worst leg, as usual.
Transition 2
  • 02m 1s
Comments:

Long way to run in biking shoes.
Run
  • 52m 34s
  • 6.2 miles
  • 08m 29s  min/mile
Comments:

Had one GU on the run during second loop. I counted people that I passed to entertain myself during the run. I got up to 83 people. Of course, they were not all doing the same race as I was. Some were in the sprint.
Post race
Warm down:

Changed my wet clothes right away and then waited to get a picture of Janette and Linda finishing. After Janette finished, I contemplated asking some of the finishers if they passed a woman wearing a leg brace. I never did ask anyone but as I was waiting, quite a few came in with leg braces. One woman had one on each leg!

What limited your ability to perform faster:

I can't complain…what am I saying?…of course I can complain. I wanted to go faster. Why didn't I? Too old! I could weigh less! Don't train hard enough! We've all got a million excuses. Truthfully, I'm happy to be able to do this and am thankful.

Event comments:

Awesome race. They have the best swag. This year we all received a nice-quality tri bag. They have plenty of giveaways at the award ceremony. Excellent healthy food!

I really want to do an Olympic distance but I feel it is a little too far right now. Which training plan should I follow? The sprint sounds too easy for what I'm doing but the Olympic seems too much?

After doing duathlons for the last couple of years, I decided to go for a triathlon. Starting with an Olympic-distance race perhaps wasn't wise, but it was fun (of a sort).

Keep in mind that the taper period is as important to your body as all of the long hours you’ve put in the pool, on the bike and on the road. It is meant to help you rest, recover and rejuvenate.
