Total Time = 1h 08m 29s
Overall Rank = 267/1734
Age Group = 40-44
Age Group Rank = 25/105
Pre-race routine:

Drove down, set up transition and went back to hotel to have breakfast.
Event warmup:

Short swim in the corral, otherwise lots of wait time. My wave was way near the end of the race. I would rather get an early start as opposed to sitting around all morning.
Swim
  • 12m 6s
  • 750 meters
  • 01m 37s / 100 meters
Comments:

Not a great swim and I knew it when I was warming up in the corral. Honestly I'm just not comfy in a wetsuit, seems the chop had come up and I had a moment where I had to collect my thoughts in the first few 100s.
What would you do differently?:

I don't know, maybe go with my sleeveless. It seems less restrictive, IDK I just don't do very well in wet suit swims. I never practice in my suit and this would be my second time wearing the suit this year... last time in a January race. No panic and have to essentially stop and collect myself.
Transition 1
  • 02m 39s
Comments:

I was just happy to get the swim over at this point. That ramp would be almost impossible to get up if not for volunteers. Long transition...
Bike
  • 31m 29s
  • 20 kms
  • 38.12 km/hr
Comments:

I could have ridden harder but not knowing the full course and what the bridge was all about. The bridge is a bit of a climb, not an out of your seat thing but a steady climb nonetheless.
What would you do differently?:

Having a compact here isn't ideal and if I race again here a bigger chain ring would probably be a good idea especially since I'm not a fast spinner. I'd attack the course more.
Transition 2
  • 01m 15s
Run
  • 20m 58s
  • 5 kms
  • 04m 11s  min/km
Comments:

I'd been dreading this part, I haven't run well since 2011 when I injured my knee. I knew if I didn't have a great swim and bike.. I wasn't making any ground here. Very flat course....
What would you do differently?:

This has more to do with prep and I felt slightly injured coming in over the last few months. After the race I went to get checked out and I was told I needed to stretch more... so I've been doing Yoga stuff for runners. Not sure if it will help with speed but my gait was getting very tight with some pain in my hamstrings... we will see. I'm on a couple days of stretching and it feels better already... I honestly thought I had some sort of bad hip stuff going on. Stretch folks!!! I'm already a believer after a few days.
Post race
Warm down:

Bottle of water, mostly dumped over my head... grabbed a Gatorade but couldn't drink it. I felt ill and not from running hard ill... but either from gulping air during the swim or water... probably a combo. I was a little bummed because I thought I had finished 26th. As it turns out the smoke and mirrors of aging up confuses that process even more.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

I freaked out on the swim, held some on the bike and I didn't run that great... honestly though I didn't have an awful race. Awesome group of competitor's, I'd like to do it all again next year!
