Sunny
Total Time = 3h 28m 42s
Overall Rank = 2057/4000
Age Group = M30-34
Age Group Rank = 267/309
Pre-race routine:

Walked 1.5 miles to transition from hotel. Had 1/2 bagel with peanut butter and 1 bottle of GU Brew w/ caffeine before leaving.

Arrived at transition around 5AM
Event warmup:

Stretching and trying to relax. Wetsuit on around 7
Swim
  • 35m 44s
  • 1500 meters
  • 02m 23s / 100 meters
Comments:

Swim time includes 1/4 mile run from swim out to entrance of transition.
What would you do differently?:

Felt as good as I could expect, and went 15 minutes faster than expected! More training will help performance.
Transition 1
  • 04m 19s
Comments:

Very muddy transition. Took my time with everything so I wouldn't have issues later on.
What would you do differently?:

Could have moved faster, but decided to take time and keep HR down
Bike
  • 1h 15m 55s
  • 40 kms
  • 31.61 km/hr
Comments:

Ease back on fluids during bike to prevent upset stomach on run again. EAT MORE FOOD!
What would you do differently?:

Make sure to take in nutrition during ride
Transition 2
  • 06m 9s
Comments:

Took time again because of mud. Made sure to clean feet before putting shoes on.
Run
  • 1h 26m 33s
  • 10 kms
  • 08m 39s  min/km
Comments:

Right IT band hurt at run start and stomach felt watery. Decided to walk when I found a few others walking briskly in a group. Ran last .5-.75 mile and back cramped up and started to spasm coming to finish line.
What would you do differently?:

Drink less on bike so stomach doesn't get upset with lack of food. Keep jogging instead of walking to improve time.
Post race
Warm down:

2 bottles of Gatorade, 2 cold towels and some walking around

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Improper nutrition starting before race led to stomach and energy issues later in race. Need to make sure to keep nutrition levels up.

I looked at the swim buoys and start thinking, "Man! How am I ever going to swim that? That looks like a very long distance from the bridge. I have never done it in one go." There's no turning back.

After doing duathlons for the last couple of years, I decided to go for a triathlon. Starting with an Olympic-distance race perhaps wasn't wise, but it was fun (of a sort).

Experts agree, doing a “mock,” triathlon on the course you’re racing can aid you in your training; performance and most of all quell some nervous energy.
