Pre-race routine:

I woke up at 4:00 am, ate a bagel and started getting my transition gear together. Met with friends outside of hotel at 4:30 and went to drop bike and gear in transition. came back to hotel and relaxed, daughter woke up and ate some fruit with her. Left for race start with friends at 6:30 (7:42 start for my wave 23)
Event warmup:

none other than walking over to the swim start from the hotel
Swim
  • 27m 50s
  • 1500 meters
  • 01m 52s / 100 meters
Comments:

Lots of swimming past waves in front of me, and 2-3 foot swells towards the end. Felt good, but added into the swim time was the 400 yard run from swim exit to transition which added a couple of minutes
What would you do differently?:

train more... I only swam about 6 times leading up to the race all in the pool. oops.
Transition 1
  • 01m 50s
Comments:

long and muddy t1, but good rack spot certainly helped
What would you do differently?:

nothing
Bike
  • 1h 00m 17s
  • 40 kms
  • 39.81 km/hr
Comments:

well, I did 98% of my training on the bike, so I expected to be moving, I passed probably 1000 people in the 40k doing a fair amount of yelling in the tighter spots
What would you do differently?:

nothing
Transition 2
  • 01m 40s
Comments:

smooth as can be
What would you do differently?:

nothing
Run
  • 46m 24s
  • 10 kms
  • 04m 38s  min/km
Comments:

sun came out and it got hot, per gps my pace slowed about 15 seconds per mile every mile starting at a 6:40/mile

in the first mile I was passed by who I assumed to be 1st in my age group and I tried to run on his shoulder but he put 1:40-1:50 into me by the finish line.

in the last mile another guy in my age group flew past me and there was nothing that I could do.

In the end, a guy in my age group but the following wave was 3:45 ahead of me on the clock (but finished 15 secons after me on the road ended up winning the age group putting me in 4th place. I was really hoping for some hardware but and perfectly content with 4th.
What would you do differently?:

train more
Post race
Warm down:

BEER

What limited your ability to perform faster:

time to train

Event comments:

lots of crowd support, good course marking and organization.

I was shooting for an age group podium but the run zapped me.

I looked at the swim buoys and start thinking, "Man! How am I ever going to swim that? That looks like a very long distance from the bridge. I have never done it in one go." There's no turning back.

After doing duathlons for the last couple of years, I decided to go for a triathlon. Starting with an Olympic-distance race perhaps wasn't wise, but it was fun (of a sort).

Experts agree, doing a “mock,” triathlon on the course you’re racing can aid you in your training; performance and most of all quell some nervous energy.
