Subject: Upped my training to every day & I'm starving!
3 weeks ago I started working with a coach. He has me training every day with one 2-a-day mid-week & both weekend days as long workouts (one bike & one run). I'm keeping up just fine, but one unexpected side effect is that I am starving all the time. I literally cannot get to a point where I'm not hungry. I am eating bigger portions at my meals & snacking healthy, but less than 30 minutes after I eat, I'm hungry again.

I'm not looking for tips per se (I'm working with my coach on it), but I'm curious if this is normal & if anyone else has experienced persistent hunger.

I'm sure your coach will give you good tips on what to eat, but yes I've experienced this too. I'll eat breakfast 3 times, a big lunch, snack throughout the day, eat dinner sometimes twice, and still wake up hungry in the middle of the night. It helps to make sure you're eating foods with dense nutrition and not just stuff to inflate your belly like bread.

On the run up to my race I was swimming, biking, running and weight lifting each three times a week. Putting in around 15 to 20 hours a week. The only way I could keep up was to eat like a horse. I tracked my intake fairly closely to my burn using MyFitnessPal, but actually put on about 5 pounds over 15 weeks. Hopefully most of it is lean mass - I haven't checked my BF% recently to be sure.

Point is that you are burning more fuel, so your body is asking for more. You can deny it to an extent, but if you operate in too much of a caloric deficit you simply aren't going to be getting the adaptations you want. Or worse, you'll completely bomb out because you can't keep up.

Yeah, my weight has fallen to 182 in the mornings (from around 188-190) in the last 3 weeks. I'm not complaining as I know I still have a few pounds I can shed (less of me = more aero!), but I want to lose it the right way where it's slow & maintainable.

Yup.

And in my experience, it is real and not imagined. Our training gets to a point where it is not possible to consume as many kCals in a day that we are burning. Either the body adapts to working within its kCal budget or we crash.

After a few years being in this zone, it definitely gets better. The real hard part is transitioning consumption when we back off of our training. 10 hours of training per week burns half as much as 20 hours per week so we aught not continue to consume double what we need for very long.

Look for foods that feed/fuel you but don't impact your upcoming workout and it will all sort itself out.

No rest days?

Sounds dangerous.

Hard assumption to make. What if one day is a 15-20 minute jog? Maybe that is better then having an off-day with big loads on the other days. What if the coach is planning that the athlete will miss one day every 2-3 weeks due to life?

I live my life hungry

The only time it's really been an issue is if I happen to crash my weight (even a couple pounds are noticeable) -- then my training starts to take a hit.  I try to stay on top of it as much as possible.  Adding healthy fats into my diet has really helped....I just use it as an excuse to eat a whole avocado instead of half a one (or an extrap spoon of fresh-grind peanut butter!).

Ditto on healthy fats--coconut, avocado, nuts, nut butters, shakes with any of the above.I often have very long days that involve a couple of hours of training, teaching (elementary so basically on feet all day) and coaching. It takes a lot of fuel to keep me going. Whole grains are also helpful as they will fill you up and are more nutritious than the refined ones. Protein foods also tend to keep you feeling full longer. If weight gain is a concern, go for foods that are nutrient dense ratherthan empty calories that temporarily fill you up, like rice cakes.

With continued training your body will adapt and probably become more efficient at burning fuel, and you shouldn't end up hungry all the time. I've done a lot of training in my life and the only time I can recall feeling hungry all the time was in my late teens, when I was still a vegetarian and running 80-90 miles a week. I've trained up to 15 hours a week as an adult and generally haven't had too many issues once I got used to it--finding time to eat is the biggest challenge! (Probably only teacher/athletes make food choices based on max calories per minute of consumption.....We often have duty at lunchtime, so have only 10-15 minutes to eat.)

I'm not going all out on every workout, and with the workouts being spread across all three disciplines, I could go 3 days between bike or run workouts. Right now I'm working a lot on my base, so that means most of my runs & rides are in Zone 1 or low 2.

I thought the same thing about never getting a rest day, but outside of being a little tired, I have had zero training related pain.

So you are a triathlete that is hungry all the time???

Never heard that before.

Just kidding.  When I'm actually getting all of my workouts in, I tend to be a hungry (and then very crabby) dude come supper time.  I have to be careful because the bag of Doritoes starts to sing a sultry tune daring me to "have just one".  If I can by pass the Doritos then I need to have the mental strength and fortiude to just say no to the Hostess cupcakes.

Most days I'm strong enough and go for a large glass of water and an apple to get me to dinner.   Some days I can be found curled up in a ball in tears on the floor of my bathroom with orange finger tips.

How much fat are you eating? Sounds like not enough.

My current diet is high glycemic carbs after a hard (zone 4+) workout, low glycemic carbs the rest of the time, moderate protein (fist sized serving of meat/fish), moderate to high fat depending on overall volume. Overall ratio is somewhere around 2g carbs / 1g protein / 1g fat. This works well to keep my appetite under control.
