Glenwood Springs Tri
Sunny
Total Time = 1h 56m 13s
Overall Rank = 29/85
Age Group = 50-54
Age Group Rank = 3/8
Pre-race routine:

got up at 5:00, drank some coffee and ate a bowl of oatmeal
Event warmup:

swam a couple of laps in the pool to warm up, felt like I was swimming well.
Swim
  • 20m 45s
  • 825 meters
  • 02m 31s / 100 meters
Comments:

While I felt like I was swimming well, nice and smooth, when I got out of the pool I was disappointed to see my time was actually slower than last years...I made some gains in my swimming this year, and I expected this race to reflect that.
Transition 1
  • 01m 19s
Comments:

I took a few extra seconds to put on a long sleeve bike jersey, the temp was only about 50 degrees.
Bike
  • 51m 46s
  • 15 miles
  • 17.39 mile/hr
Comments:

I thought I could have a decent bike, but it didn't turn ou tthat way. I was hoping for a little stronger tail wind on the way out, and knew I was going to have a strong head wind on the way back in. Just didn't have any bike legs. I didn't get passed by anyone, and I passed 2 people.
What would you do differently?:

Not quit bike training after Boulder in June!
Transition 2
  • 01m 3s
Comments:

Good trnasition
Run
  • 41m 21s
  • 4.75 miles
  • 08m 43s  min/mile
Comments:

Felt like I had a decent run, took a while to get my run legs back but thought I managed it well, felt really good on the Midland secttion, just as I was reentering the park I got a stitch and had to slow way down for the last .5 mile, finished runnign it all..
Post race
What limited your ability to perform faster:

I basically quit the bike and swim training after my 70.3 in June, and have only been running with a few trainer sessions thrown in.

I have always been an athlete, growing up playing team sports like basketball and soccer. I also ran in a couple of 10K races every year, so I had no reason to worry about running a 5K...right?

After I left the running store, I couldn't stop thinking about the sprint tri and how much of a challenge it would be for me. So instead of joining a gym, I started riding my bike and it felt great.

I couldn’t help but feel that the race had beaten me. Perhaps duathlons were more for me? No, I was more determined than ever to succeed. I was determined to get on top of my swimming.

This life of mine is not so different from yours. It has a multitude of similarities. I suffer from uncertainty, I get nervous at the thought of registering and when getting to the starting line.

I am not going to buy a tri-suit before my first tri - I want to make sure I am going to stick with this before I spend a lot of money on it so I want to figure out what will work best.

I couldn't believe that my splits kept getting lower! I started to run harder after I passed the "5 km" sign and picked a few people that I wanted to pass.
