Age Group Rank = 9/97
Swim
  • 18m 42s
  • 880 yards
  • 02m 07s / 100 yards
Comments:

Course layout (including timing mat placement) changed from previous years. All times were much slower than last year (fastest split last year was around 8:30, this year it was almost 13:00). This was my slowest split in 7 years, but my highest swim placement in the field.
Transition 1
  • 02m 23s
Comments:

PR T1 (probably for all races, not just this one). 148th of 1742 Open AG & Celebrity divisions (8.5%) / 152 of 1757 w/ Elite & Challenged (8.7%).
Bike
  • 50m 44s
  • 18 miles
  • 21.29 mile/hr
Comments:

PR for the course by over 2 minutes. First time over 21 mph in any race.
Transition 2
  • 01m 34s
Comments:

PR T2 for this race. 121st of 1742 Open AG & Celebrity divisions (6.9%) / 124 of 1757 w/ Elite & Challenged (7.1%).
Run
  • 28m 11s
  • 4 miles
  • 07m 03s  min/mile
Comments:

PR for this course (7 years). Course was long: 4.25 miles by my Garmin. I was definitely well under 7:00/mile.
Post race
What limited your ability to perform faster:

Long swim course cost me a substantial PR.

Never finished in top 100 in this race in 6 previous attempts (close a couple times)--improved all the way to top 50 overall (49th of 1742 Open AG & Celebrity Division finishers; 52nd of 1757 with Pro/Elite & Challenged Athlete Divisions included).

Event comments:

7th year doing this race...one of the largest sprints in the country.

After doing duathlons for the last couple of years, I decided to go for a triathlon. Starting with an Olympic-distance race perhaps wasn't wise, but it was fun (of a sort).

Since your “A” race is your marathon, which you stated in your question, this should be your main focus. I encourage you to taper a bit for the sprint distance triathlon.

Keep in mind that the taper period is as important to your body as all of the long hours you’ve put in the pool, on the bike and on the road. It is meant to help you rest, recover and rejuvenate.

I’m a 240lb man, and I run relatively long distances. How would you recommend training for marathon and IM distances as heavy as I am?
