Event warmup:

Practice swim 15 mins the day prior
Swim

  • 2112 yards
  • 02m 26s / 100 yards
Comments:

MISSED SWIM WAVE START - the bus was late getting to the start 6:50am and my swim wave started at 7am. I tried to get fluids on bike first and pump up my tires. Then get all of my stuff ready but had to use the bathroom for no. 2. As I was getting in the bathroom the gun went off for my swim start. After running down to the start, and getting my wetsuit on, I was able to start with the final half swim wave, the ladies swim wave, 10 mins late. ACTUAL SWIM TIME WAS 41:20.
What would you do differently?:

Get on an earlier bus or insist they start the bus up to the race start faster
Make sure that tires are inflated properly
Transition 1
  • 06m 40s
Comments:

Long walk uphill from where you got out of the water to where the bikes were
I was very happy that I dried off appropriately because the air was cold
Definitely happy that I bought a sweatshirt at Walmart
What would you do differently?:

would have had arm -warmers under the sweatshirt
gloves!!! it was cold
Toe covers for shoes
Bike
  • 4h 32m 29s
  • 56 miles
  • 12.33 mile/hr
Comments:

Lesson in overcoming adversity and resilience and dedication to finish!

Passed one person to catch up so that I wasn't last person in on the bike!
What would you do differently?:

Be sure that bike is properly tuned up
Not sure about using the race wheels
Transition 2
  • 02m 59s
Comments:

Saw Kim after coming in off of the bike. Racked my bike quickly and changed and kissed her.
What would you do differently?:

Had to go no. 2 but this was out of transition on my run. Unfortunately, this added time to my run time instead of transition. Go to the port-o-potty in the transition if they have one next time.
Run
  • 2h 12m 36s
  • 13.1 miles
  • 10m 07s  min/mile
Comments:

Great run on a shaded course so the sun/heat didn't effect me much. Was in the mid-70s so great temperature. Unfortunately, rolled left "good" ankle around mile 2 so ended up having to run that off and in some pain the rest of the race and had some fluid in the knee after.
What would you do differently?:

Not roll my ankle!
Post race
Warm down:

Pasta, Salad and Great Session Porter Beer! :)

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Mechanical Problems on the Bike

Event comments:

Not a very organized race, but a decent race. Had a great run and a good swim. Felt strong on the bike but just had mechanical issues. Didn't have a good race performance time-wise, due to the bike issues, but was very happy that I was able to overcome adversity and finish the race!

Course: 4 mi downhill at the beginning was tough with the cold and wind Rear tire blew out just after the downhill. Tried to fill it up with a CO2 cartridge but it wouldn't hold air and I just froze my hand worse than it already was. There appeared to be no bike support. Finally, a man stopped his truck who was super helpful and a really nice guy. He was watching his girlfriend compete and is a mountain biker who has done Ironman FL before. He helped me change the tired and had an air pump. However, when trying to put the rear wheel back on hub fell apart. Another guy stopped to help after making a wrong turn on the course. He said his day was over. He was super nice for offering his help and said if he couldn't go any further he would rather help someone else. He and I managed to get the wheel back in place but the back brake was rubbing and I could not go forward. Finally, i decided to take the rear brakes completely off, bend the brake cable around, and tuck the whole thing in my Bento Box. I rode the rest of the ride (50 miles) without the rear brakes. Meanwhile I saw Bill Johnson who tried to help, then went off on his own and made a wrong turn and didn't end up biking the whole course (he did the Olympic course) and got DQ. And, my friend Tammie Linville was being put in the ambulance next to where my bike was broken down because of hypothermia. She DNF. I was the only one out of my group to complete the full half bike course and finish the race.

Hey there! I didn't know there were any other BTer's out there. Boy, you had a rather epic, adventurous day! Well done working through your mechanical difficulties and finishing strong. You had a great run!
