Overall Rank = 66/77

Age Group Rank = 7/7
Event warmup:

I never warm up in the water before a race, but given how cold it was, I did. It was a good decision.
Swim
  • 10m 44s
  • 250 yards
  • 04m 17s / 100 yards
Comments:

A very good swim. My coldest swim ever, but a good warm up right before was helpful. Got really choked on water for about a minute. Called over a kayaker so I could maybe not drown, Then, it was back to swimming.

My goggles were the foggiest they've ever been, so I'm glad this was a short race.
Transition 1
  • 02m 4s
Comments:

Someone had knocked the helmet off my bike onto the ground, so it took me a few seconds to figure out what happened. How rude.
Bike
  • 35m 6s
  • 7 miles
  • 11.97 mile/hr
Comments:

I totally need more time in the saddle, but for what I've put in after knee surgery, I'm OK with this time.
Transition 2
  • 02m 13s
Comments:

It was nice not to have to bother with a race belt.

Got confused about which way to go for the run, so that was annoying.
Run
  • 28m 50s
  • 2 miles
  • 14m 25s  min/mile
Comments:

Something strange happened when I saw the run turnaround for the mini: I started tearing up. My last triathlon was a half Ironman last year in Muncie, after which I tore my meniscus and had knee surgery this April. I was just so happy to be back racing again, because I love this sport and it felt like coming home.

When I saw the sign, I knew I'd be done soon. I couldn't wait to see Gary; when I did, I started getting teary eyed again.

I felt a little silly — it was just a mini, my shortest tri ever — but when you see your knee the size of a softball and can barely walk after surgery, you appreciate the "mini" things in life. I was grateful and happy.
Post race
Warm down:

Forgot to stretch, so I'm feeling it this evening. Ate half a banana and half a PB&J sandwich.

We have new 10 and 20 week training plans for the New Year! These mini sprint plans are very conservative and will get any person thinking of training for a triathlon ready to cross the finish-line.

In addition to writing your race number on each upper arm, they also wrote your age on your calf. This allowed me to see who was passing me by in the bike section of this race.

The boat was being tossed around. Someone noted that there were whitecaps on the waves. Another guy said, “This is going to be challenging.” I began to wonder what he meant by 'challenging'.

Fall's also the time to shop! In fact, now's the best time to retool some of your triathlon equipment for next year, right before the Christmas season begins to jack prices upward.
