Pre-race routine:

up at 6:30. coffee and kashi w/ silk and cranberries. used my advair. kelly arrived and off we went. made the choice to switch to the 1 mile, since i a) have been sick for a week and wasn't sure how i would feel doing 2 miles and b) got some flack about racing at all today, so i compromised and switched to the shorter course. still no DNS on my record (apart from the time i missed a race because i wrote down the wrong day, but that doens't count since i went out and found another race to do that same day).
Event warmup:

used my albuterol inhaler. did a couple laps out to the first bouy and back (not very far). coughed a bit. did some sommersaults in the water. coughed some more. (really, i am feeling much better - if i felt like i did last weekend, i wouldn't have raced. really). just before the race started, i spotted birkirunner, but we only had about 30 seconds to say 'hello' before the race started.

Comments:

took it easy. stayed with the same woman through the whole race. she finished just slightly ahead of me. was hoping to 'kick' and pass her, but i didn't have much in me for a kick. wasn't tired out from the swimming, i just didn't have force effort, just sustaining effort.
What would you do differently?:

nothing
Post race
Warm down:

got my race shirt. found kelly. had a banana. found our stuff. headed out. wanted to hang around to watch all the 2 milers come in, but kelly had to get on the road to meet her mom in wisconsin.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

+ bronchitis
+ lack of swim training this year

Event comments:

this event feels like what i imagine tris felt like when they first started out. organized, but personal. everyone is smiling and jumping around in the water. even the fastest swimmers were friendly and laughing. i've done this one since it started, 1 mile the first year, 2 miles the second year, 1 mile this year, 2 mile next year (right, kelly???). i'd recommend this one to anyone who wants to do an ow swim. plus, its a great feeling to do a swim, have it feel familiar like in a tri, but then hop out of the water and be DONE! :)

Isn't open water swimming FUN?  I agree...it's great to be done when you get out of the water!

Nice job!

Good to meet you and Kelly for the 3 seconds prior to the start. Neither of you look like your avatars, although I guess swim caps and goggles changes things. good job!
