I'm in, but haven't been very active in the forum because my preparation is not going well due to illness and back-to-back week long business trips. However, I'm starting to get excited about the race, I did it last year, and liked it enough to do it again. How's you preparation going?

Sorry to hear about your illness.

Training is going well.... I did an 18 week plan, which may have been a bit too long. The past few weeks it has been a struggle to stay motivated for training. I'm really just ready "get going" with the race, if that makes sense.

You mention doing the race last year... any insider tips? I'm imagining a relatively smooth bay swim combined with a flat, fast bike / run course. Any surprises out there? Thanks.

Like you said, it's a really smooth bay swim, with a flat bike/run after. You have to be ready for the heat, it's still really warm in South Florida, the weather only got a little cooler race week last year. I heard quite a few people from out of town complain about the heat during the run last year; but, it wasn't that bad if you're from a warm climate. The run includes the famous bridge, which can be challenging if you're not used to running hills, you'll have to cross it 4 times at the hottest time of the day, depending on how you feel at the time, it can be tricky.

I did that as my first Half Iron and have done 3 since. Looking back at it I really enjoyed that race! Swim is decent. No push or pull either way. Bike was good. No hills. Last year had minimal wind. The only downside to the bike is if you were a younger female and your wave was last and close to the men you got a bunch of men in packs CHEATING and drafting in HUGE groups almost knocking you over. But it was still pretty nice because it was so flat and lots of people that you were riding with cheering you on. Run was HOT. And yes that bridge you have to run over 4 times is not advertised well! But it was still fun! My FAVORITE half still! Lots of fun scenery to see!

During the race there will be plenty of opportunities to exchange bottles, so I'm thinking about going with the aero bottle and Gatorade bottle and fill up as necessary. What should I do?

If a heart patient can do these things, then so can those of you who haven't been split open like a fish and sewn back together.
