Sunny
Total Time = 2h 29m 7s
Overall Rank = 18/96
Age Group = M55-59
Age Group Rank = 1/5
Pre-race routine:

Hometown race made it nice. Got up 5:15 left home about 6am. had to stop at Kwik Trip for banana. Honey Nut Cheerios for breakfast. Got parking spot in RPU lot. Numbers are way down. Could have arrived at race site 6:45 and been OK.
Event warmup:

Short run & bike. Peter S racked by me, also not too far from Ed M. My one piece tri suit came apart again, I had to rip the zipper to get it off. Not a huge deal cause it happened early enough and I had my 2 piece in the car. Saw the Harke's pre-race.
Swim
  • 33m 17s
  • 1642 yards
  • 02m 02s / 100 yards
Comments:

No issues on the swim, I felt I had a good swim, a little disappointed in my time. My navigation was good my breathing good. 1:18 faster than last year.
Transition 1
  • 01m 16s
Comments:

1st in AG -46 sec. 6 sec faster than last year
Bike
  • 1h 09m 4s
  • 24.8 miles
  • 21.54 mile/hr
Comments:

Good bike, the hill hurts overall mph. I was 31 at the turnaround. 31 sec faster than last year
Transition 2
  • 01m 11s
Comments:

2nd in AG +22 sec. 15 sec faster than last year. I had a little trouble with my socks, had even debated going sockless. Biggest mistake was forgetting my hat. I realized it about 15 yds away from my TA spot but decided to go without it.
What would you do differently?:

Remember hat!!
Run
  • 44m 22s
  • 6.21 miles
  • 07m 08s  min/mile
Comments:

Started out good averaging about 7:00 for first 2 miles but started slowing down. The 2nd half got really hot and I kept slowing down. No way I was getting under a 7 min pace. 1:03 slower than last year.

Had problems with Garmin again and had to program a new run. Need to figure out what I'm doing wrong.
What would you do differently?:

Remember hat
Post race
Warm down:

Drank a lot! I was really dehydrated. Went back to car to drop off gear and bike and changed. Couldn't find my T-shirt which ended up in the bottom of my plastic bag. Went back for awards. Had a brat and some Cheetos.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Overall 1:07 faster than last year.

Event comments:

No Jerry for awards, Mark & company handled them. They did start the sprint awards early then after a short delay the Oly awards. Separate door prizes for both groups. Big prizes at the end.

This race was hurt by new races in the Cities and definitely this year seemed to have lost some of it's buzz. Numbers had to be an all time low.

I looked at the swim buoys and start thinking, "Man! How am I ever going to swim that? That looks like a very long distance from the bridge. I have never done it in one go." There's no turning back.

After doing duathlons for the last couple of years, I decided to go for a triathlon. Starting with an Olympic-distance race perhaps wasn't wise, but it was fun (of a sort).

Experts agree, doing a “mock,” triathlon on the course you’re racing can aid you in your training; performance and most of all quell some nervous energy.
