I need some inspiration and some good music will make running more fun.

Normally I run to sensual vocal trance (check YouTube)
but am up for a change.

Kings of Leon is my current play. Otherwise it's random from current and Classic rock, Blues, Metal/Alt rock.  Just none of the current pop stuff

anything with a good beat. Luckily, I teach indoor cycling classes so I have a HUGE library of music. I usually just put my ipod on shuffle and see what it comes up with.

Anything from trance, classic rock, techno, top 40. There are some good threads on this forum with peoples favorite songs to train to.

The opposite for me. Mostly current pop stuff, club remix, up tempo country pop. I have a rule that most of the music I listen to should be less than ten years old. I don't  want to be the old guy listening to classic rock and 80s hits in 2014. Its good music, but I've heard it enough and given it enough of my life.

I have a secret weapon song that I always listen to before races: "Midnight Madness" by the Chemical Brothers. If I get that stuck in my head, it's as good as illegal supplements.Otherwise it's always upbeat electronic music that makes me bounce off the walls. Prodigy, Justice, Daft Punk, Nine inch Nails.

I actually listen mostly to podcasts. Especially for my long runs where pace is nice and easy. Love radiolab, this American life, and stuff you should know.

The sound of the surf and the wind blowing through the Torrey Pines up on the hill.

Last week I was surprised by a huge pelican diving into the lagoon right next to me chasing a tasty mullet fish. (Hit the water with a loud crash)

My rule is that IF I need music to get me through a run, I probably need to find someplace else to run

Sorry, got nothing else for you.

I don't listen to music always, but if I do, its usually for my hard runs. Tempo/threshold runs, or interval training. I prefer heavy, adrenaline fueled music to keep me going. Including: Machine Head, Lamb of God, Sepultura, Slayer, Hatebreed, Metallica, and more I am not thinking of. Last year, Rancid "And Out Come the Wolves," got me through some good runs, good tempo in lots of those songs. Been listening to some Iron Maiden lately too, got to love some of those classics, "The Trooper," "Hallowed be Thy Name," and you can't leave out "Run to the Hills." (Which should be on every running playlist!!!)

If I can get out to some trails, or a park, or just somewhere different for my long runs, I don't need music. But if I am going to be out 2 to 3 hours running around my house, I've seen these streets enough that I need a little distraction. I like Opeth for longer easier paced runs.

I am not one of those "purists," where I need to search my soul during my runs. In most cases I'd rather not be alone with my thoughts! (Sort of just kidding). But really, if I don't have music, I like it when I can just totally zone out.

I Should run near your place. Most interesting here is the frog love songs during spring and Canadian geese both at fall and spring. I run a cross country ski trail when there is no snow. Running where there is a lot of people or with friends also helps to keep the beat.

I haven't built a music list but Led Zeppelin's Rock and Roll is quite near 180 bpm. Definitively fails the 10 year rule however.

The music video for that song will haunt my dreams for years to come.

Yea, but how can you say no to some good Survivor? Anything from the Rocky IV soundtrack and I feel like I could have single handedly ended the cold war.

Interesting perspective on music.

Well, I remember my parents, both born in the early 1920s, would watch Lawrence Welk on TV in the late 70s. I think that in 2014 a lot of "Classic Rock" and my wife's fondness for 60s music is the exact equivalent to Lawrence Welk.  The new old fogey music.

I basically have an offset bell curve of what I listen to based on what I load into my Shuffles.  Mostly centered on the last 10 years, some "new music" stations on Pandora to find new things I like, yet sometimes I'll spend an afternoon with oldies (80s or older).  When you don't hear it all the time, then a say a Pat Benatar song is a lot of fun. Like visiting an old friend.  And some things just get banned from the rotation.  I can't take another "Come on Eileen" for at least 5 years.

And some new stuff doesn't stand up to time.  I went through a Kelly Clarkson period a few years ago, and I put some into rotation recently and well, it was like visiting an old friend then remembering how annoying they had become. :-)

I listen mostly to electronic music & "trap" because it's repetitive in your face rhythm gets me pumped. Also, most DUBSTEP & TRAP sounds the same and is "composed" at 86-93 BPM which means running to the beat actually puts you at a solid 180 ish cadence.

But it's definetly not for everyone...

You know, I never thought about that. I guess dubstep IS good for something!

Well, if I'm not listening to audio books. . .

Pandora channels I've used this year:

Kings of Leon (good for long runs, tempo)
Kill the Alarm (got turned into them via a Sufferfest video)
Godsmack (great pre-race warm-up music or during hard intervals)
Korn (again great pre-race warm-up music or during hard intervals)
Summer Hits of the 90's (hey, its fun to relive the past)
Daft Punk
Imagine Dragons
Bob Seger

Nothing...

I tend to actually listen to Pandora when I'm on the winter treadmill though. After washing and killing 2 iPods, I gave up running with music and I actually enjoy it now. I don't understand the interval comment with music. I think it would distract me from noticing if I'm slowing down or if I'm losing form and need it fix it asap. For the trainer it's Netflix all the way. Basement is a little too boring not to have something.
