Noticed some folk have lots of races under their belt and some not so many, so...

are you a Racer or a Trainer?

I'm a Trainer, the most races I have done in a season was 4, but usally only 2 but I enjoy training for a specific race.

Whcih are you and why?

I would have to say I am both.  I train just about every day and it is the highlight of my day.  I have lots of great places to train where I live and it is always fun.

On the other hand I love to race.  I race about every other week year round.  We have many, many running races in our area and I just enjoy the buzz and excitement of the crowd.  I often race when I probably should not but I'd rather give up a few minutes than forego the experience.

Races require money, (more) time, and some travel. I do about 3 or 4 tri's a year and usually another couple of events such as Spartan race, 5k's, etc..

Being a single Dad it's difficult to schedule races around the kids, and their events. So I guess that puts me in the trainer category? If money was no object and the kids activities were lighter I would race more. The races give me an objective, which pushes my training. In turn makes me feel better, which is my real goal.

I say there is a difference between working out and training. You train for a race you signed up for. Other than that, you are working out.

I suppose I'm both.  I race around 10-12 times a year, but if for whatever reason I could not race at all, I would still train somewhat similar to what I do anyway.  And by the same token, if there was a lot more races where I lived, I wouldn't mind racing more often...assuming it was affordable.  I mostly bike race though, so races are usually in the $30-50 range.

I spend the money on races so I have to train to not waste the money I spent on races.

i guess racer since i think racing is the best form of training.  i had the biggest performance boost from doing a month with 4 tris, 2 TT's, 1 bike race, and a 5k.

I am a trainer most definitely, Not that I don't enjoy racing because I do but I can take it or leave it races are not a priority for me, last year I only raced 2 twice this year not at all as I was working on getting my dogs thru to the agility nationals and that was my priority for the year, but I still train 6 days a week on 12 week cycles all the same as if I were getting ready for a racing season. I would like to do a few more this year now that I don't have to put as much effort into the Pooches training this year as I am not going to the nationals with them this year..I actually really enjoy the group training I do with the tri club more then anything, weekly OWS splash & dashes and Bike and Core group classes I like the social aspects of it and they are a hell of a good workout to boot usually, its always easier to suffer with others rather then by yourself.

I train to race about once a month. Each race energizes me to train harder to do better at the next one. Without the racing, training tends to fall off quite a bit for me. That being said, I like to train to release stress and have time to my thoughts and reflect.

interesting question, I'd say I'm a racer. Mainly because I race better than I train. I hella enjoy training and am quite consistent, but what I mean is that I'm somehow able to pull out all the stops on race day, even when I get left in the dust on training rides and runs.

That said, how often I race is independent of whether I consider myself a racer or a trainer. I race when I can afford it and only do races I want to, not races that are "prestigious " in any way. I first and foremost want to enjoy a race...the kicking butt part is just part of it all

I think I race to train... I enjoy training a lot, the weight loss being the biggest part. BUT, so far in my tri career I have had a longer distance to train for and developed a training plan to suit it. The plan gets me out there every day. I did my first 70.3 a couple of weeks ago and have gone on one bike ride and one run since.. :/ I have been looking at big races for next season and trying to plan a training schedule, otherwise, I think I'd stay pretty lazy with only short runs and some bike rides every week. And, I'm not winning any races I do, but I love the accomplishment that I get from the training I did.

While I don't do very well in the races they are the goal. When I am out running/biking/swimming I do know that I will be competing participating in a race.

I do have other goals that are not specific to racing like losing weight but that is just a matter of dietary choices.

So while I am mostly a BOMOP participant, I do train to race.

What is a BOMOP?

I am no threat to podium, and training feels really great so I might be a "trainer" by the described criteria. however, I love to be part of the group at races and find that I need to have a race on my schedule to keep intensity in my training up. So, by these criteria I am somewhere in the middle.

Wow! that is precise. Does it works for other positions as well like for instance a BOBOP or a MOBOP?

Used to be a trainer. I saw it as a way to be healthy. The race was just a test to figure out how I am doing. But since I had such a blast in my first triathlon races, I am now looking constantly for the next race. I also tend to be much more rigorous with what I eat and the way I train having races as objectives. I guess that makes me a racer. A very motivated but very bad racer however. If such a thing exists, I am probably a BOBOP.

Kind of... BOBOP would be DFL (Dead F*cking Last) and MOBOP would just be BOP. I'd day BOMOP is a little to precise also.. I'd just say MOP.
