Subject: Bike Injury Question
I went on a group ride on Monday and worked hard in a big gear to keep up. I felt good until I got off my bike and had severe pain in my left hip/lower back area. It is getting better, but I am not sure what it is or what caused it. The pain is still strong enough to keep me from riding /running, I am hoping it will continue to feel better. Any thoughts on what it is or ideas on how to avoid it in the future would be great.

Thanks

I had the same pain after my first race. Not sure what caused it, but icy hot and drinking lots of water made it go away.

Patient: My wrist hurts when I do this

Doctor: Well then don't do that.

DON'T "work hard in a big gear to keep up"! You're much better off spinning at a cadence of 90 to 110 rpm in a smaller gear. It's a lot less stressful on the joints, muscles, and in your case, your "left hip/lower back area."

Your description of where the pain location is a little vague. Sounds like an overuse issue though (you mentioned pushing some big gears).

I'd continue with some gentle stretching of the upper legs/hips/ lower back until you are ready to resume training ( and then start back slowly and test the waters).

Good luck.

I could be way off here--I certainly am not a sports physician--but it sounds to me like you were mashing the big gears. If that is the case, then try dropping to a lower gear and concentrating on more fluid spin technique.

I had guessed that was the issue, pushing big gears. I am having a hard time myself figuring out exactly where it hurts as strange as that may sound. It is getting better with heat and rest. I am swimming tomorrow and maybe going for a short run or ride, whichever feels better.

Thanks for all the help, I may need to put a reminder on my bars that says faster not harder!
