Sunny
Total Time = 12h 24m 35s
Overall Rank = 228/437
Age Group = 40-44
Age Group Rank = 52/78
Pre-race routine:

Up with little time to spare, did my Back Rx routine and started getting dressed.
Nutrition:
2 cups of hotel room caf coffee (~6oz / cup )
1 Mini Cinamon Rasion Bagel with PeanutButter
1 Banana on way to site
Event warmup:

No Warm up time. Got to T1 with barely any time to spare.
Put nutrition on bike, dropped of Special Needs bags, got in line for T0 but had to bail and get on the last bus to swim start.
At swim start had just enough time to hit T0, then rushed into wet suit.
Guess warm up might have been the run down the beach in sand, in wetsuit to swim start. Got there to hear the "90 seconds" call... had a moment to take in the sunrise and calm down, then it was game time.
Swim
  • 54m 26s
  • 4224 yards
  • 01m 17s / 100 yards
Comments:

Good swim, settled in well and used my race plan to stay focued.
First part was a bit rough (waves) and no current, but after the channel narrowed the current really kicked in and WOW what a swim.

45 degrees at start
What would you do differently?:

Find a drafting partner
Transition 1
  • 13m 5s
Comments:

Long run to transition from swim start. T1 Changing tent was a zoo. Took a bit longer than I wanted but had to stop and hit the porta-john.

50 degress at start
What would you do differently?:

Be about 5 minutes faster
Bike
  • 6h 20m 59s
  • 112 miles
  • 17.64 mile/hr
Comments:

Given HR and power numbers likely to have gone too easy .
Able to pee on bike, but stopped at 56miles / Special Needs for pee too
Took all 6 scoops of Infinit
Stopped at 8 to top off water and infinit

Nutrition Plan was spot on...
Fluid nutrition in Areo bottle.
Water on back cage
Backup nutrition in downtube
Gel on 30, Waffle on Hr, and Bonk on 3h worked to keep calories in and stomach happy.
Picked up remaining inifint mix at SP
What would you do differently?:

GO harder on the bike.
Transition 2
  • 11m 21s
Comments:

B2B does T2 right!
Changed Soxs, Wore Altra shoes, hit the potty again

What would you do differently?:

Go faster in T1
Run
  • 4h 44m 46s
  • 26.2 miles
  • 10m 52s  min/mile
Comments:

Run was good! Had great legs, and first three miles was all about slowing myself down to save some for later in the day.

Followed the race plan, as I got tired, just ran aid station to aid station. I stayed in my box and controled what I could.

It was an ADDed benefit to have the Charlie Daniels Band playing at the Amphitheater on the run course.
Thanks to some sound advice from my coach and Pete, I was able to handle the wall and the darkness falling with no problem.

Best part of the day was the sprint finish thru the shoot with my two sons! What a great way to end a big day:

What would you do differently?:

Push harder
Post race
Warm down:

Grabbed some food and water from the finishers area, got a few photos and went back to hotel to clean up

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Bike.

Event comments:

Setup Events knows how to run a great race, and having done three long course races this year, this was hands down the best. Still has an old school feel, friendly but competitive atmosphere and great volunteers. The water front finish with the crowds is AWESOME!.

Well done Setup, Well done.

So cool that was the CDB playing. The people were doing some drinking and looked to be enjoying themselves. Some had a crushed ice drink that I wanted to grab so bad. It is bad that the ice looked so good and not the drink?

My issue is that I am currently deployed and training outside is proving difficult, especially on the bike. I have found a safe 10km running loop but I am struggling with the bike training.

I strained by lower back last week. I know that I need to rest in order for it to heal fully, but I am concerned that I am going to lose needed fitness for the race. Will this affect my performance?

Although you can receive all of your vitamins and minerals through foods eaten in the diet, nutritional products used for training may not allow you to meet recommendations on a daily basis.

This is not an easy task, especially for the “9-to-5er” with family. But you can do it – all without sacrificing your marriage, job or family.
