Pre-race routine:

Nothing special once again. I had Zero training and just relied on previous experience and the fact that this was a Sprint race to get me through.
Event warmup:

  • 09m 16s
  • 440 yards
  • 02m 07s / 100 yards

Felt good through the first turn and then my shoulders started getting tired. I was able to slip into a good rhythm and hung in just fine. I swam with hardly any need to sight. I was able to keep a straight line and only stopped once to make sure I had a good sight marker for the swim exit.
What would you do differently?:

Same old song: I need to train!
Transition 1
  • 00m 52s

I felt like I could have gone quite a bit faster. Getting my watch on and race belt felt clumsy and unnatural. I'll have to try to figure out something between races
  • 38m 44s
  • 12 miles
  • 18.59 mile/hr

I was in with a good group. It took about 6-7 miles to get into the groove. I was able to hang in there while I got my bike legs back and caught about 7 or 8 people that had passed me along the way. That was an added surprise (#1) for the day.
What would you do differently?:

Not much, given my complete lack of training over the last 2 years I executed about as well as I could have hoped for.
Transition 2
  • 00m 59s

My legs were cold and my hands as well so getting my socks and shoes on was a real task. It was like I had to left hands. This could have gone a lot better as well. Just out of practice
  • 24m 26s
  • 3 miles
  • 08m 08s  min/mile

I'm doing the 22 week sprint tri program and the 2 mile bike ride it starts with is not very challenging. I see this as a opportunity to train the right way and challenge myself. Any ideas?

This past spring I realized a few of us were heading in the wrong direction physically. We were getting together for poker games and kids’ birthdays, but that was it.

When I told my husband that I planned to work toward completing a sprint triathlon, he smiled and was supportive, but a bit disbelieving.

The challenge? The accomplishment? I want to do this because it is an opportunity to live life. The event is an indoor sprint triathlon. I get to experience the challenge on a safer scale.

Already a cyclist and not a bad swimmer, I figured all I had to do was build up to running a few miles and I’d be ready to go. The challenge invigorated me, and I ran out to buy new running shoes.
